Hey Wedding Wire Community,

You guys have given me great advice before so I'm hoping you can do it again about wedding insurance. I've been doing research all day about it but I can't decide if it's a really smart idea or a rip off!
Here's some details. My venue is a very established and well respected country club. It is very unlikely to close unexpectedly. My vendors are also all owners of established businesses. I trust them totally to do their jobs. My venue doesn't require us to purchase insurance. They have their own liability insurance but say we are still responsible for our guests. We will be serving beer and wine but don't expect any of our guests to go crazy and destroy the place. Our wedding will be in the summer so no threat of blizzards and a tornado /severe thunderstorm is possible but unlikely.
I guess with all that being said the chances of needing the wedding insurance are very low. Do you think it's worth spending the $350 I was quoted? I'd love to use that money elsewhere but I don't want to regret it later. Thanks!

I'm not sure, Monica. Definitely reach out to a customer advisor and inquire, you never know!

We are planning 60-80 guests and having an event where alcohol is served (by a bartender). Quotes for just liability insurance ranged from $105-$175 for $1 million in coverage (via TheEventHelper.com and WedSafe). Additional event cancellation insurance (via WedSafe) is another $175 for around $30k of coverage. So $350 for a full coverage policy sounds about right.

We are required to purchase liability insurance by our venue, but not event cancellation insurance. Honestly with what the political climate is (and with climate change impacting storms and weather systems in unpredictable ways) we are considering purchasing both. Like you we don't want to spend money we don't have to but our wedding has been a huge investment of money and time, and if for some reason something happened, we certainly wouldn't be able to recoup our investment any other way. While I'm super confident in our venue and vendors, the extra couple hundred dollars seems worth in compared to the prospect of losing tens of thousands of dollars and not being able to have the wedding we are so excited about because we lose it all. With WedSafe you can purchase event cancellation insurance for any amount, so you can insure more or less than the full cost of your wedding if you want some protection but really aren't worried about losing your venue, for example.

We would prefer to use a specific wedding/event insurance company vs our homeowners insurance because we don't want any claims impacting our rates going forward.

Ok so I just looked into WedSafe more. Our quote changed! Our wedding now costs $150 for liability through them, but $200 for $25k of coverage for event cancelation. However when I dug deeper I realized they have itemized limits for event cancelation insurance, so if you've allocated your budget differently you might not be able to recover the full amount you insured your wedding for.

For example, most of our budget is going towards venue and food, and we've already paid over $2,000 in deposits. We're spending $3,000 on photography because it is important to us, but not doing counseling and not requesting gifts. So even if our wedding cost exactly $25,000, but we allocated our money differently than laid out in the limits above, we wouldn't get reimbursed for the full cost of our loss. Read the fine print!

We'll probably just end up doing liability insurance and crossing our fingers nothing goes wrong. We've picked super reliable and well reviewed vendors, so as long as we can avoid egos causing WWIII before the year is up, I think we'll be ok!
