Wedding Myths?? Anyone chancing it?

FutureMrs.B, on July 3, 2014 at 7:44 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24

Wearing pearls: this is one of those wedding myths with both bad luck and good luck meanings. The ominous version of this myth holds that pearls represent future tears; thus wearing them will bring many tears and heartache in the marriage. The luckier version of this implies that the pearls take the place of the bride's real tears, thus she'll have a happy, tear-free wedding.

Tears on the wedding day: it is considered good luck for the bride to cry during her wedding. She will have cried all her tears away leaving none for the marriage. Another theory holds that a bride's tears are good luck as they bring rain for the crops.

Rain on the wedding day: this is another good luck - bad luck wedding myth. In the good luck version, rain is said to foretell the coming of children just as rain promotes growth in the farmer's fields. In the unlucky version, rain drops represent the many tears a bride will cry throughout her marriage.

Sign your married name before the wedding: it is considered bad luck for the bride to sign her married name before the wedding as it tempts fate. For the same reason, the bride should avoid wearing her entire bridal outfit (wedding dress, bridal veil, shoes and jewelry) prior to her wedding day.

Dropping the wedding ring: this is another contradictory wedding myth. On the one hand, dropping the wedding ring during the wedding ceremony was seen as lucky as it would shake out evil spirits hiding in the ring. On the other hand, dropping the ring was considered the most ominous of events; whoever dropped the ring was said to be the first to die.

The bride shouldn't make her own dress: this wedding myth states that for every stitch of the wedding dress the bride sews herself she'll shed one tear during her marriage.

Time of day to get married: the couple should exchange their vows as the clock's minute hand is moving upwards, therefore any time half past the hour, for example 2:30 or 4:45. The upward movement is said to bring blessings upon the couple as the minute hand is "ascending towards heaven."

Surname of the same first letter: it is considered unlucky for the bride to marry a man with a surname that begins with the same first letter as hers. This wedding myth is summarized in the following Victorian rhyme: "To change the name and not the letter; is to change for the worst and not the better."

OH! I did not know this and was planning on having pearls incorporated in my jewelry! I still think I would chance it and wear them though, I'm not much of a believer in superstitions **knock on wood** ;-)

The one that makes me grateful is davids bridal kept saying to wear all my outfit to try on the dress with. I did not have my shoes so i wore old ones.

I am wearing pearls, FH saw my dress, I will cry regardless I cry during Shrek, I have used my married name already ( only because we have a pet and so the pet has always been a Matthews and the pet people get confused when I pick him up). And we are having an outside wedding in FL, so it may rain, it rains randomly in Fl. Nothing could keep me and FH from being together. Smiley smile

My mom wore pearls at her wedding--she cried during the ceremony, and she has cried plenty since then. I'm not at all superstitious. FH hasn't seen my dress, but that's because he wants it to be a surprise, not because we think it's bad luck. And since he's going to help me pick it up on Saturday, he will at least see the bag, if not carry it.

You wouldn't believe how much my mother fought me on the "Time of day" one. My ceremony is starting at 6 and she kept trying to make me change it to 5:30. She would NOT let that one go.

Very interesting to hear the other ones though!

I am wearing pearls on the wedding day too! We're getting married at the "wrong time" haha - 5 PM.

Also, my mom married my dad and had the same first letter in her maiden name. They've been happily married for over 30 years -- pretty sure these superstitions hold no bearing on real life lol. :-)

Here in Fla., I tell couples that it is good luck if they see dolphins, the "flash of green" or a rainbow.

Bad luck to be on a beach if there is a chance of lightning.

Good thing I'm not superstitous! I've signed my married name since we got engaged while doodling! And used it to get telemarketers off the phone. And, FH and I's last names both start with P. I'm not changing FHs because of a myth so oh well!

A lot of these are pretty interesting and I hadn't heard of them, thanks for sharing! @Nancy T, my FH told me that two people that see the green flash will fall in love, this was two days before we started dating and we actually did see the green flash. The night he proposed to me we also saw the green flash, it was pretty amazing!

The only "superstition" I'm following is that the bride and groom can't see each other before the ceremony (no first look). He's already seen my dress but I can't wait to see him as I walk down the aisle!

Well, I certainly will have crying covered. I cry during insurance commercials!

The Church set my time at 3:00, so that won't budge, I'll be thrilled if the weather is decent (Northern NJ hasn't had much luck in October for the past couple of years...) and I've only practiced how long my name will be if hyphenated! Spoiler alert, it's long(!!)

I am chancing a couple. Like the Pearls. I am wearing my great grandmother's pearl necklace. And I will be testing my complete ensemble! But I am getting married at 3:30, and I will probably cry. You're welcome farmers!

What will come, will come. I just thought these were funny, how much stock people had in these ages ago.

I'm chancing some too. Especially the pearls. My sister is loaning me my late grandmothers pearls as my something borrowed for my walk down the aisle. And I'm pretty sure I'll cry . . a lot. And we're getting married at 6:00pm . . too late to change that now, the invitations went out Monday.

I followed traditions I wanted because I wanted, and disregarded superstitions if I wanted. FWIW, I wore pearls and did NOT cry and have been happily married for 15 years.

I had never heard of those. The only tradition/myth thing I know is the "something blue" rhyme. I'm not doing it. I really don't care.

I'm truly not worried about "chancing" my marriage on any superstition. We've been together for over 8.5 years. We got this.

I've never heard of these, some sound quite a bit corny to me. I'm not a supersitous person anyways, I once had two black cats (sisters) and no bad luck befell me while I had them. As for rain, and rainbows bring them on. I love stormy weather the best. Hope I get a rain shower, stormy weather, or a rainbow on my wedding day, I think it would make for some awesome pictures.
