Wedding no no?

Monique, on June 16, 2019 at 6:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 42
Going to a wedding this weekend and they just said to save money they want people to bring food....enough to feed 150 people if you are bringing something. Yikes. I really feel this is not right of them to even ask. Is it totally wrong of me to choose not to bring something?

WOW! I've NEVER heard of such a thing! I personally wouldn't take any food and for that many people, no. It's not even YOUR event but you're being told to help feed a whole village of other people? That seems ridiculous to me.

Based on your wording, it seem like they gave an option. So, if you don't want to, then don't.

I could maybe see if it was a close friend or sibling who asked me to make something and it was a super small casual wedding with like 25 people. But 150???? There is no way! I’ve never heard of such a thing either and think it’s insane. Are they expecting gifts as well as their guests making their food??

I agree with others you do not need to bring anything (however, I'd make sure I had a BIG meal before I left for that wedding, since the odds of eating anything substantial at the wedding seem like they might be pretty small).

Wow! We’re going to have around 65 people total and I definitely wouldn’t ask people to bring food to feed that many. I totally get trying to save money, but if they can’t afford to feed people it sounds like they should have planned differently not decided to pass on stress and cost to the guests. I wouldn’t bring anything personally and would eat ahead or after and not plan on eating at the reception.

I wouldn't bring enough for that many people, but I would probably bring something just so I know there is something safe for me to eat.

I do think it is different I would bring something but not that much of it. I heard of people doing it for small small weddings.

I mean safe as in, you don't know how the other dishes were stored/prepared. I would feelbnore comfortable eating something that I made than something strangers made.

If I were invited to a potluck (this seems to be one), I'd bring something. But I'm not bringing enough to feed 150 people. Here's a disposable tray of something that might feed 25.

It’s my opinion that if you can’t afford or aren’t willing to feed the people you’ve invited to your wedding, you shouldn’t be having a wedding. It’s not like it’s a small wedding with 20 people. They invited 150 freakin’ people.
FH and I invited 55 people. We wanted a small wedding, but we also knew we weren’t willing to spend the kind of money it would take to invite more people and still have the type of wedding we want. We are keeping everyone well-fed and providing them with plenty of alcohol...because we have asked all these people to celebrate with us. I wouldn’t have the gall to ask them to bring food. Unbelievably tacky.

I don’t like eating food that isn’t made by a professional in an environment that could be less than clean. I don’t know what the cleanliness habits of others are. I’m not a fan of potlucks for that very reason. I got serious food poisoning once after eating at a potluck dinner.

I don't blame you. I'm sure anyone else would have been too. Definitely don't feel bad if you end up not taking any food with you.

I’d skip it. It’s rude of the couple & unless my family I don’t like potlucks, especially not for a wedding. Gross.
