Hey everyone!! So I’m curious, I’m shopping around for photography and so far we have been quoted $3,000 for 6 hours which will include the edited, high resolution digital prints. What are some of your prices you’re paying/paid or ideas of a good budget? I originally was going to go with the photographer that was included in our venue but I’m not a fan of his quality of prints. Our wedding is small-micro. our actual ceremony is only 15 min however, I’m looking for pre, during and post wedding photos. I want thought into the photos and beautiful captures (first look, getting ready etc kind of pics). I’m not really sure how long this stuff takes to even really give a realistic ball park.😞maybe coming here will help me decide if this is a good price or if I should keep looking.

Honestly they are expensive if you want a good photographer and I think with Covid prices have gone way up. My girlfriend got married before Covid and her photographers prices went up by almost $1,500 after Covid. I’m paying $3600 and I think it’s for 6-8 hours plus includes an engagement session.

We will have two photographers for 8 hours, an engagement photo session and an album for us included for $5,500 in CT. Rights to the digital edited photos are included but prints are extra. We are expecting 700 photos from the wedding and 50 from the engagement shoot. We are also adding on parent albums as gifts for an additional cost.

I don't know if they travel! They are on wedding wire the name of the company is: True Love Photography ~ they are based out of Pinellas County & Navarre, FL is up quite a distance from the Clearwater Area. Her Husband is a Reverend & I know they often work together (he was our officiant as well) ~ you could certainly contact them through here or this is a link to her website: https://www.atruelovephotography.com/ their website shows' packages costing up to $2500 but I am sure travel could add to the cost (you should check out the website as they list lots of packages). I LOVE the look & feel of Tammy's pictures!

No, and honestly people who undercharge for their work really do a disservice to themselves as well as professional photographers who live off of their craft and rely on photography income to pay rent, feed their families, etc. I don't have any connections in those areas and if I knew those people I would encourage them to charge more, not overwhelm them with clients who don't value or want to pay a fair price for professional photography.

You can try reaching out to colleges with photography, photojournalism, art, or fashion programs. Students just developing their portfolio often undersell themselves, but most people who get into wedding photography don't formally study photography or go to art school. Its highly unlikely you will find a photographer who is both skilled creatively and has the professionalism and experience to guide models, direct shots, and work through all of the non-photo capturing parts of your day with ease unless you pay for it. There is a reason professionals charge what they do for their services.

Having gone through the whole gamut of being a young college student learning photography and underselling myself to now charging a realistic (yet very modest) price for my work, I can assure you that most of the time you get what you pay for. I don't rely on photography for income, but if I'm going to put labor into satisfying a client I'm going to make it worth my time and I'm also going to charge fairly for my years of experience, professionalism, and the quality guarantee I provide.

PS: Smaller weddings do not mean less work for the photographer at all, so don't anticipate a huge cost savings just because you only have 20 people. Additionally, the majority of photographs at a wedding are concentrated into a small time period and there is a significant amount of time for pre-planning and communication that doesn't change whether your event is 2 hrs or 10 hrs. So even though you are only having a 20 person, 3 hour event, most of those three hours will be quite photography intensive and nearly as much work for a photographer as an event twice as long. We had an elopement (maybe 2 hours of shooting, one photographer) and then a full wedding celebration (7 hours of shooting plus a second shooter) and got maybe double the number of shots at the longer event, even though it was 3.5x longer and we had 2x as many photographers. The couple, ceremony, and portrait shots all happen in a condensed timeframe, and the details, shots of your reception, etc are typically what fill out those extra hours and the rate of shots/hour significantly drops during the fringes of those longer events.

It wouldn't hurt to look up photographers who specialize in elopements or intimate weddings. They often have shorter events built into their pricing structure.

Anyway, my advice is pay a fair price to a competent photographer. Most of the time you get what you pay for.

Thanks for your response, Kari. It makes a lot of sense and I appreciate your insider perspective and suggestions. I have some thinking to do because while I want to pay a photographer their worth, I also have to consider if I want to spend on photography (for 2-3 hours of condensed photos) the equivalent of what I’m paying for my dinner reception. Thanks again for your guidance.

I'm definitely biased, but I feel like photography is worth the investment! It is one of the few things you will retain after the wedding day is done and over with. You'll rent your venue for a day, or a weekend, and then it will not be yours anymore. The food will be eaten, alcohol consumed, the flowers will wilt and die, and your hair and makeup will be undone and washed away. Spending money on having your wedding "vision" come together and then not making the investment in photography just doesn't make sense to me. Photographs are what will capture the spirit of your wedding and allow all of those beautiful details to last beyond the day itself. If you have kids, I guarantee they'll want to see your wedding photos in the future. On your 10th, 20th, or 50th anniversary, when your wedding day was so so long ago, photographs will help you relive that day. They'll remind you of how beautiful you looked with your hair done up and in your gorgeous dress, or that you lucked out with amazing weather on the most perfect day at the most stunning venue. They'll capture the look on your fiancé's face when they see you for the first time, or your loved one's joy as they see their child grown up or their best friend marry their person. I'm not saying other aspects of your wedding aren't important, but investing in photography is a way to honor all of the choices you made in making your day come together, and in preserving those fleeting details for years to come.

I probably would have skimped on nearly every other aspect of my wedding before shortchanging myself on a photographer. I just feel that capturing your once in a lifetime special day is so worthwhile! I don't think you need to spend a fortune, but its definitely worth a little bit of a splurge to be confident that you'll get beautiful photos in the end.

I haven’t really gotten to the photography part of wedding planning. But this thread has really helped me figure out my budget for my photography. We are only going to have about 50 people at our wedding.

I'm saying just over a thousand for all day coverage with two photographers and videographer due to the fact that when I paid for it they had the videographer for only $100 they had a special going on. And I only need the second to technically for the first hour during the ceremony and things like that however because they will be traveling together it'll only be $300 for the second shooter for the entire day

Thank you for your input! I was finally able to land a photographer and I don’t think her price is too bad especially for a traveling photographer 😇
