Wedding Pies rather then a cake?

May2010Bride, on February 23, 2009 at 8:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

I saw this over the weekend on a show on the Food network. Instead of a wedding cake they had a bunch of different "Wedding pies". They focused on a bakery up north. But I thought it would be something different since this won't be a first wedding for either of us and it would definately be a new twist. Has anyone had this or been to a wedding that did this? The show had mostly fruit pies (Apple, peach etc) and stated they always stayed away from staining berries like blackberry etc. It also had chocolate cream pie. I'm really considering this..anyone else?

I am not thinking about pies, but I don't want your traditional wedding cake, either, and most people understand. I think bakery cakes are terrible, and I just want my mom to make a big 'ole duncan hines cake or something that I'm actually going to enjoy. Pies are a great idea...especially if you prefer them over cake or whatever your reason may be.

I haven't seen pie, but cupcakes are pretty popular cake-alternatives, and I've heard of others substituting cake for different types of dessert in general, so go for it!

Hi, i actually wanted a small store bought cake to be the centerpiece for every table, then i thought it would be too much of a hassle and thought the cupcake idea with a nice glass cakestand was even better, its easier to eat and would have more of a neat appearance.

Maggie, I don't know if you're planning on buying store-bought or bakery-bought cupcakes, but just as a heads up, bakeries / caterers might actually charge more for cupcakes than for cakes b/c it can be more labor-intensive, since it's a lot harder to make little tiny decorations and be precise about it than to do something on a larger scale. Just something to keep in mind Smiley smile

I say have what you want. I prefer pie to cake myself.

At our mid-afternoon wedding we had a dessert buffet and that was all the food we served (There were little mini cakes). People loved it.

    Hi there!

I actually did a table of pies for my wedding! It was such a hit!

Instead of deciding on a cake, we thought it would be great to do pies by people in our family. The one we cut was an apple pie by my grandma (she's famous for them), she made 4 or 5, my sister made pecan pies, my aunt made blackberry...and so on. I think we had about 6 or 7 different kinds...our guests loved them.

We also had donuts (our favorite kind) as favors on a table as they left...so that is a little more 'cakey' if people were still craving that.

I am a wedding minister and I did a wedding this past October that did this, it was great! They did not like cake and they had a pie that they cut, then they had a few small pies set out on a table and then HUGE sheets of pie for all the guests as well. It was something that was indeed different but I really think the guests enjoyed it.

I'm liking the idea more and more and TOTALLY forgot my F-MIL makes a graham cracker pie that my FH told me I need to get down pat incase anything happens to his mom. So I was thinking that the day before (since I'm taking that day off or work anyways) that I can have her show me how to make them while in the process of making them for the wedding inwhich that will be the pie that we cut!!! As far as other pies I think we are going to go to sams and place orders and get them from there. But I've searched more since I posted this and have found pies at a wedding are more and more common. So I'm sold!!!

I have designed and coordinated two weddings that did pie instead of cake. At both, the bride & groom cut their favorite & fed each other in the traditional way. At one, guests were allowed to serve themselves from a large varietey of pies baked by Sweets & Savouries in Poulsbo, WA. At the other, the bride & groom served the guests their pice & ice cream (which covered the whole receiving line issue at the sam time.) I think Essence of the Thymes in PT. Orchard, WA made those.

Lastly, I did have client use 8 serving cakes as centerpieces - they were goregeous (Morningside Bakery in Port Orchard)
