Wedding planner help!

Ashley, on June 9, 2021 at 10:08 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
My fiancé and I are using a full service wedding planner to help us plan. She seems to really know what she’s doing. However, I wanted to know if couples can choose differently than the vendors they recommend. Is that professional?

For example, she’s recommended a couple of vendors for my wedding (haven’t put anything down or reached out yet btw) but I know of some other vendors that also have some great work and for a better price possibly that I also want to contact and get to know more of. I don’t want to step on her toes since she’s the expert, but I also want to go with my gut when it comes to other vendors I like that aren’t on her preferred list. Is this okay?

Does her contract with you say anything about needing to use her vendors? If it doesn’t, I don’t see the harm in sending her other options. If you’re researching vendors too, though, it might not be cost effective for you to even have a full wedding planner so that’s something I would consider too.

We have a full service planner as well. For some, vendors, we went with her recommendations. For others, we went with what we found. We met all the vendors though regardless who found them first. You are not stepping on toes to look for what you want and keep your options open, but I think transpanrency in communication of who's doing what is helpful to avoid duplicating effort Smiley smile

Nope! Its your wedding, and as long as her contract doesn't stipulate that you have to use vendors from her recommendation list you're free to look into others.

This is an opportunity for her to build more relationships, so she'd be silly to not allow it.

Like CJ said, just be open and honest that you like her ideas but you found someone else you'd like to meet with too.

I would suggest talking to her about them. I’m sure she could tell you whether or not she has considered those venues and if she has why she doesn’t suggest them. It’s important for your voice to be heard but also to respect her expertise and you seem to be doing a fantastic job of that.

I would def reach out to other vendors and hey maybe a vendor you pick will become another recommended vendor for your planner.

Since you are paying her for her knowledge, I’d see what she thinks. She may never have used them and be able to negotiate a great service for you, or maybe she knows something about them that makes them not a good fit.
But unless her contract has you only using her vendors, I don’t think it would be any sort of issue.
I am in procurement and I do know it can be frustrating when someone will come to me telling me they want to use X vendor and I know that vendor is awful or charges too much, has bad quality goods, etc. Thankfully I have my people trained to trust me that I know what I’m doing, but it’s hard when you just started working with her.

Those are only recommendations. So they’re typically vendors that she’s worked with and knows the quality of the services they provide. Also, sometimes vendors will give discounts to the couples if the wedding planner refers them.
