Wedding stress related GERD. What to do?

Rae, on August 27, 2017 at 1:54 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 12

Currently sitting up in bed because I wake up every hour with my acid reflux acting up Smiley sad I was recently diagnosed with GERD and have been making changes to diet and meal times to prevent this, but after a stressful wedding dress shopping trip I'm in so much pain. I want to sleep but can't be horizontal for more than a few minutes. Anyone else have this issue, and what do you do to prevent it when it's wedding stress induced? I'm guessing it's going to come back later when I'm deeper in the process Smiley sad

Ask your doctor to put you on a PPI

Ive dealt with acid reflux for years. Sleep on your left side, it squishes your stomach less. Also smaller meals helps. Not sure what will help for stress related though.

I also suffer from it. Do not lay flat, prop up your chest and head. Avoid caffeine, including chocolate before bed since it relaxes the flap that helps keep acid down. Smaller meals throughout the day and no meals at least 2 hours prior to laying down. If you can give up soda/caffeine, then do. I keep bottles of water next to the bed to help dilute acid by drinking it like crazy. Watch acidic foods. I take one 20.6mg omeperazole with magnesium in the morning and one at night before bed. ETA spelling and it's the Wal-Mart version of Prilosec OTC but I get the one with magnesium

All of the above + I started on Kombucha to help with gut health & Switchel (ginger has a calming effect for stomach issues). About 2 weeks of medicine, diet & home remedies mine calmed down substantially

I agree with PPs about the PPI. It does wonders.

I thought I had that. Turned out to be my gallbladder and I'm having surgery tomorrow. Yours sounds a little more like GERD then mine though. I guess my advice is everything in that area has similar symptoms, so make sure you're got the problem nailed so you're addressing the right thing.

I prop my pillows and sit up to sleep. It's not the best sleeping position, but it helps relieve that pain and gets rid of acid reflux while sleeping. I also have some stinger prescription meds now from my GI. If I take one every morning and eat correctly, I don't experience as much with the GERDS. I didn't read all the other comments, but have you seen a GI yet?

I work for a thoracic surgeon that performs anti-reflux surgery, so this is rather familiar. PPs are correct. Eat smaller more frequent meals. stop eating at least 3 hours before bed time. eliminate chocolate, alcohol, citrus, tomatoes, caffeine, carbonation, avoid straws, really anything acidic or gassy, also if you smoke stop. try stacking your pillows or get a wedge pillow, this is not super comfortable by may help. Ask about a PPI, you may require a GI cocktail, a regimen of a few meds to help. If this is long term unbearable i would ask your doctor to perform a barium swallow, there are other tests to evaluate your reflux, but i wouldn't start there.

I've dealt with this in the past from extensive time overseas traveling. The doctor said to cut back on high acid foods, pretty much everything I loved (wine, garlic, black pepper, coffee, tomatoes..) until my stomach could normalize. I took probiotics for the first few months and omeprazole/prilosec and my stomach is 1000% better. I have to take a prilosec now maybe once a month, if I know I'm going to eat something high in acid. I would try a combo of natural diet change and medication.

Did your GERD go away after the wedding? This same thing happened to me I was Diagnosed with GERD in Oct. It really put me down because I was told to remove all the things I love and that taste good. It took me a while to get the lifestyle/diet thing. I am trying it again I am just praying it goes away so I can enjoy me and my fiances wedding.
