Wedding Superstitions - Using Your Gifts Before the Wedding Day?

Lynnie, on April 17, 2018 at 11:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 43

How much do you buy into this wedding superstition ?

This wedding superstition follows the same principal as “don’t count your chickens before they hatch”! This old wedding myth says that using your shower and wedding gifts before the wedding day is inviting bad luck and bad “juju” to your wedding and marriage. While this sounds like a fairly understandable “don’t jinx it” approach, most etiquette experts say you can ignore this one and start using your gifts! Especially if you’ve already publicly opened them at a shower and sent thank you notes. Smiley shame

Are you waiting to use your shower and wedding gifts until after the wedding day to avoid jinxing it? Or are you putting those early presents to good use?

    We started using them right away, I don't believe in bad luck.

    Some are packed away some are being used. Hopefully will be buying a house in the next year so will pack away the things I want to put in the new house. Not because of the superstition.

    If I receive gifts before my wedding day, I don't see why I shouldn't use them as long as I send a "Thank You" right away!

    My bridal shower is this Sunday; so I haven't received any gifts yet but I plan to use them right away.

    I'll use mine when I get them, otherwise I'd have to leave them all packed up or I'd accidently use them. It's like having a birthday party a week before your birthday and waiting to use any gifts until the actual day, I don't buy into this.

    I just had my shower this weekend, and received a few gifts in the mail in the past week too. I felt that we had no choice but to start using them because we have no room for all the gifts otherwise. I spent most of yesterday throwing out/putting aside for donation the older items and replacing them with the new items.

    The only things that we're not using are ones with my new last name on them, such as monogrammed towels and a sign that says "The O'LastNames" on it. That feels like "jinxing it" to me.

    I haven't received any wedding gifts yet but, would have no trouble using them right away. We've received a couple of engagement gifts though. A beautiful serving platter I've used many times since receiving it but, we have yet to crack open the bottle of champagne we were gifted.

    I was actually planning on waiting to open and use all of the gifts until after the wedding, but FH was antsy and wanted to open some. We have some open, but most are still packed away.

    Don't believe in this either. I didn't have a shower, so the little gifts I did get before my wedding we did use, and the things we bought from the registry before the wedding we used as well.

    We have only received one gift, other than money, they were a set of very nice knives from FH's uncle. I do not believe he has used them yet, but not for superstitious reasons.

    Another one I never heard! Currently though when (and if) I have a shower I probably won't. My fiancé and I still don't live together (not yet). And though he doesn't really have anything of his own, his 2 roommates do and have provided all kitchen related needs. The other stuff we both have .

    Not using anything before the wedding! Not only does that seem like bad juju, it feels really rude!

    Don't believe in this. If they got it for us, I'll start using it ^^;

    I probably won't get around to using much before the wedding, but I won't wait for any specific reason!
