Wedding Superstitions

Sara, on January 9, 2012 at 12:20 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 27

While we were spending Christmas with FH's family (immigrated from Russia, for backstory) the topic of the wedding was brought up. They haven't been involved in the planning because FH doesn't get along well with them, so we are pretty much done with everything at this point....

His aunt asks what my colors are (Purple and Ivory) and his mom, sister and grandmother get upset and start talking about how purple is not a color for weddings it's for funerals and it will be bad luck and end in divorce. I have never heard anything like that (but my FMIL also gave everyone a coin and a fish scale at Christmas to keep in our wallets to promote wealth so...)

The discussion got rather heated between my FH and his mom so it was dropped. What other strange superstitions about weddings have you heard (other than the traditional "bad luck to see the bride before the wedding" stuff)?

Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind & true,

When February birds do mate, You wed nor dread your fate.

If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know.

Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden & for Man.

Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day.

Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you'll go.

Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred.

Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see

Marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine.

If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry.

If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember.

When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last.

    I love hearing about superstitions! :o) @Hayley - that's a cute idea!!!

    I've heard these ...

In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the "best day" to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health.

The groom carries the bride across the threshold to bravely protect her from evil spirits lurking below.

Getting married when the clock hands are pointing north is considered very good luck.

@Melissa thanks for posting that, I've never seen the full rhyme, but I originally picked May instead of June and his mom said that part

@Kimi those are fun! I never knew why the groom was supposed to carry the bride over the threshold, I always just thought it was sweet

    Something old,

    Something new,

    Something borrowed,

    Something blue,

    And a lucky sixpence

    In her shoe.

Married in White, you have chosen right

Married in Grey, you will go far away,

Married in Black, you will wish yourself back,

Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,

Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,

Married in Blue, you will always be true,

Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,

Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,

Married in Brown, you will live in the town,

Married in Pink, you spirit will sink.

    WEDDING DAY

    Good Omens:

    seeing a rainbow

    having the sun shine

    meeting a black cat

    meeting a chimney sweep

    WEDDING DAY

    Bad Omens:

a pig, hare, or lizard running across the road

    seeing an open grave

meeting a nun or a monk foretell barrenness

    OTHER BELIEFS

If the groom drops the wedding band during the ceremony, the marriage is doomed.

The new bride must enter her home by the main door, and must not trip or fall - hence the custom of carrying the bride over the threshold.

The spouse who goes to sleep first on the wedding day will be the first to die.

    WEDDING CAKE

If a single woman sleeps with a piece of wedding cake under her pillow, she will dream of her future husband.

    ONE MORE....

BRIDAL SHOWER The first gift the bride opens should be the first gift she uses.

Everything the bride says as she opens her gifts will be repeated on her wedding night. Somone should be assigned to write down these comments during the shower.

The person who gives the third gift to be opened will soon have a baby.

Save the ribbons from the shower gifts to make a mock bouquet to be used at the wedding rehearsal.

    WEDDING DAY

Certain days of the week, and certain months of the year are better than others for a wedding.

    Monday for health,

    Tuesday for wealth,

    Wednesday best of all,

    Thursday for losses,

    Friday for crosses,

Saturday for no luck at all

I'd always heard that brides wearing any red on their dresses was bad luck, as red denotes blood. It was one of the reasons why red wine was never served at weddings, on the off chance any should inadvertantly spill or drip on the bride's dress! (Of course, in China, brides marry in red believing it brings them good luck!)

I'd also heard that a bride should never make her own dress - she would be making her own shroud.

Lastly, in Jewish tradition, the best day to marry is on Tuesday, as God blessed that day twice during the creation period.

There are all sorts of traditions...

The bouquet was carried to ward off evil spirits and flowers were carried to cover the fact that people didn't bathe in the middle ages.

The best man was the 'best' fighter in the tribe/clan because it was believed it was unlucky for the groom to fight on his wedding day and the best man would fight in his stead.

The bridesmaids often wore identical dresses to the BRIDE to confuse neighboring tribes who were trying to 'steal' her back/away.

At one point they would tear small pieces of fabric from the brides dress believing them to be 'good luck'.

Sugar was very expensive at one time so having a 'sweet' cake is a sign of 'wealth'.

Depending on the culture there are dozens if not hundreds or thousands of superstitions and cultural concepts that are used at weddings. We help couples with a lot of different cultural, religious and traditional elements... They can be a LOT of fun. Smiley smile

    The May thing really sucks!

FH is Polish, and his gma has some wacky traditions. I wouldn't be surprised if she brings that one up.

I actually looked up the meaning of my flowers for that reason. Not that I would've changed them....

You guys forgot - the groom seeing the bride before the ceremony on the wedding day is bad luck!
