Is renting a tent and having an outside wedding a better way to go than decorating an inside venue???

It depends on how high your expectations are. If you want a tent that is fully draped with lighting and a/c and a solid subfloor then you could be looking at costs higher than renting a venue. But if you have dreams of customizing the decor then the tent is the way to go because you won't have any restrictions. It doesn't hurt to meet with a rental company and get a quote.

I am learning that an outside wedding is not going to be simpler than an inside venue like I had originally thought. Costs for the tent, table and chair and other rentals (linens, flatware, etc) can get pretty high. Plus the setup and take down. We aren't having the fully decked out tent as Kimberly described, but we're renting a dance floor which has to be pounded into the ground... I would just price out all of the pricing for the rentals and determine who will be setting up and taking down and decoratining (and if they need to be paid also), and compare to some indoor venues to see if it's worth the effort and money. Good luck!

From what I have seen- not usually. Most indoor places comes with tables and chairs. If you use a tent, you need to rent them as well.

You also have to worry about air conditioning/ventilation, exterior noise, and how you will get power and lighting. You will also not be able to use candles (some indoor venues don't allow them either) because of the restrictions of the rental places.

It's also alot more hassle in terms of figuring everything else out and getting someone to set everything up.

I think it's a really nice touch to have something outside, but there are so many concerns such as the weather, temperature, uneven ground, bugs, etc. Even if you have overhead protection, that won't stop the ground from getting muddy if it rains. It's a gamble but if it works out, I think it's even more beautiful than an indoor reception.

We are having an outdoor wedding because it fits our personalities but it is expensive to rent the tent, tables, chairs, etc. But we aren't doing all the draping and extras, just some lights because it is really dark at night. We aren't doing much decorating though because the scenery is so beautiful.

We were going to do that at my parents but found it was cheaper to rent a rustic barn type venue. This way we don't have to rent linens,chairs/tables, etc. If I didn't find this place we definitely would have rented tents!!! P.s. those tents are made for rain.

Hi Yolanda - it really depends on what you and FH want. We are doing an outdoor wedding in the Keys, and everything was included except the tent. The tent will cost us an additional $2k, due to our potential wedding size. It is not always the case that you will have to rent the chairs, tables, etc. it just depends on the venue. That said, depending on where you are having your wedding, you may want to have the reception indoors and have part of your cocktail hour outside if weather permits. When choosing to host part of your day outside, always always always ask about backup space and "Acts of God"(i.e. what happens if a monsoon hits). Good luck!

We are also considering a tent wedding but may end up doing indoors instead based on cost. For example we are talking with a catering company in Portland, Maine area and for the same menu, drinks and all that it was going to be about $25 more per person if we do a tent vs. one of the indoor places that they have exclusive rights to. We are still in love with the scenery at the tented location. Right on the ocean with views of the Portland Lighthouse!! Love IT!! So we'll see if it's worth the extra cost / planning to have the perfect outdoor setting.

Our reception is in a tent at the Zoo. I would recommend checking if there is a public non profit like the Zoo or a musuem that offers a tented ceremony/reception. The benefit is that the rental of the space will save money. For example our rental comes with tent & chairs for $1200. We did have to use a preferred caterer & that included the tables & linens (basic) & basic centerpieces - which our florist will utilize in expanding the design of the room. I originally thought our Zoo would be way out of our budget but we have managed to make it work. If you do a public park, you have to rent each individual piece. I haven't seen it but you may be able to shop for inclusive packages. Those usually cost a lot more. Most of our nicer outdoor venues in my town have preferred catering which puts a huge limit on where you can cut cost. & the size of my wedding cut out a lot of other places. Do a thorough search.
