Wedding Traditions that Must Die

Shannon S., on April 27, 2011 at 4:42 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 57

The "standing for the ceremony" thread reminded me of my least favorite wedding practice: RECEIVING LINES.

You've just gotten through a ceremony, you think you're on your way to the party, but, oh, WAIT! You have to stand in this huge, tedious line to make idle chitchat the bride and groom and randoms. It feels like going to the DMV in formalwear.

I understand the desire to want to welcome each guest, but that's why you serve the wedding couple's food first, so they can eat and then go table-to-table to greet their guests.

I got really peeved about this last summer, when I had to stand for a 20-minute ceremony, then stand again in an epic receiving line. By the time I got to the reception my feet were killing me.

If you could, what wedding tradition would you obliterate from the planet? You have the magic button, but you can only pick ONE!

Showers?

Bouquet tosses?

Garter tosses?

Best Man's toast?

The Chicken Dance?

Mother-son dance?

Bachelor parties?

Anything?

AWWW!! THe chicken dance? Oh we have to do the chicken dance....we will have WAY too many kids there to NOT have the chicken dance unfortunately!!!

I hate that I can't see my FH until the wedding, as it's bad luck....well, I didn't see my EX husband until the wedding and we can all see how THAT worked out!!!

I agree with you on Receiving Lines. The Bride and Groom make their way around to every table eventually anyways, what is the point?!

Definitely group dances. Nothing annoys me more than having to do the YMCA or Chicken Dance.

    Bachelor parties!!

Future Mrs. C. - That tradition is from the old days of arranged marriages, and it was to protect ugly brides from being left at the altar. I don't think you qualify as an ugly bride! : )

Toasts. We only had my Dad say a few words because I wanted him to feel special, but man, I hate speeches....I've been to SO many weddings where they are long, tedious, uncomfortable, awkward, boring, etc. On rare occasions they are short, sweet and funny, but gaak for the most part.

Receiving line is so outdated...and i would ban the glass clinking/bells/noises to kiss...Id feel so awkward!

(Oddly enough we have to have the Chicken dance! Its the only one all 4 of my young nieces know so it'll be worth it to see them!)

Thumbelina, do you remember the wedding speech from the movie Old School? (where hes drunk talking about people gag banging his gf) My prankster FBIL memorized it for my other FBIL's wedding 2 years ago! Hilarious

I love this post. But, I don't think I would have enough space. So, I will keep it at....

    1. The "giving away" of the bride. I beg your pardon, I am not an object. However, I did and will do it for my father.

I hate receiving lines! I also don't like when the couple is taking pictures between the ceremony and reception leaving guests without the hosts for a long time. I don't mind if it's half an hour. I get you need to take those pics, and this is the best time. But let's try to make it quick and sweet.

I agree. I don't like the receiving line! I am going around to each table to greet my guests, give them a hug, small talk, yadda yadda. I think it's also more personal that way. It's like you WANT to see them, not "Oh great, here's the line of minions!"

I hate the whole "stripper-bachelor" party thing. I don't get why people say it's "your last day as a single man!" That doesn't mean you can do a whole bunch of stupid crap and get away with it. Most guys are alright with it but I have seen some guys go COMPLETELY way out of line! So I find it stupid.

I've never been to a wedding with a chicken dance! haha! I saw one in a video though, I think ALL those "special" dances are iffy. It really depends on the crowd. Some people have a blast, other times it's just cheesy and lame!

I agree with Mrs.Cooper on the seeing the groom thing. I should have put that down as a close tie with number 1. We have dressed each other for the last 8 years why should we change on our wedding day?

Oh, and as if I didn't type enough already! lol!

The whole superstition over the "don't let the groom see this!" "No you can't see each other!" "AHHH EVERYTHING IS RUINED HE KNOWS YOUR DRESS IS WHITE!!!"

That drives me nuts. He sees me when I wake up every morning, if he hasn't run yet, he isn't going to run on our wedding day! lol!

We are doing a "First Look" though, so it's still special.

I honestly don't care if FH sees my dress or not, but he doesn't want to see it. He's so cute lol. He also doesn't want me to see him when he tries his tux on!

Also, and what I HATE! Is that he isn't going to shave his beard until the day of the wedding, so I am even MORE surprised and happy to see him! haha

I had to laugh about the Chicken Dance! I plan to give my DJ a list of songs I want played and a list of songs that I don't want played. The Chicken Dance is at the top of the do not play list..lol

We also are not planning on doing a receiving line, I really think it's a wast of time when we/guests could be enjoying our selves. We plan to make rounds at the tables.

The whole, not seeing eachother before the wedding is outdated in my opinion. It just seems so silly! I'm not getting married until 4pm, why would I want to wait ALL day on my wedding day to see my man?! We won't be spending the night before together but the day of the wedding, I plan to see him throughout the whole day so we can decorate the venue and do our photos before the ceremony.

Other - giving away the bride. Yeah, there are several of the others I don't like, but that one really sets my teeth on edge.
