Wedding venue cancelled my date

Heather, on May 31, 2019 at 11:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 22
I was booked at a new wedding venue in my town called Noah's event Venue and was excited about being one of their first weddings in the new venue. This week, with 4 months to go to our wedding they called and told us that the venue won't be done until June 2020 and they had to cancel our wedding. I'm devastated and trying to pick up the pieces at this point. With a strict budget and amazing deals on every aspect of the wedding being ruined by this what would you do? Is uninviting a guest after the save the date goes out due to this to stay In Budget a horrible thing to do? Or do you just plan a quick wedding your just ok with? I'm at a loss and could use some advice from all you brides out there

I wouldn’t uninvite anyone. I would find a venue to fit your current guest list within your budget, even if it isn’t the perfect venue to suit your vision. Relationships are more important than wedding venues.

Omg! I'd be soooo mad with STDs out and everything!? They should've known sooner and given other options! What did they do for you for your inconvenience?

I agree with Caytlyn! It's a super awful thing your venue did to you and FH. Don't let them stop you from marrying your best friend! The wedding might have to get pushed back, but then you have time to find another venue and have the wedding you want!

They offered me a full refund and $2500 credit to use at A Noah's Venue. I don't think I could trust them again to even use it

Thank you for the advice. I'm not sure what the right thing to do here is. I think I'm just in shock still.

Thank you Cher! I am looking to push it back and give me a little more time to get things figured out. If I have save the dates out already, how would you suggest correcting the date change if this is what happens.

Contact everyone who received one and explain that circumstances beyond your control have pushed back the date! The situation isn't your fault, so they should be understanding Smiley smile

Do you want to push your date back? Or pick a new location? I would push back on the venue and see if you can get them to give you the $2500 in cash towards a new venue instead of towards an event at one of their others... is there even another one in your area?

If I were in your situation, this is what I would do:

Hit the ground running and start looking for a new venue that is available on your current date and that is comparable to the cost/guest list occupancy as Noah's.

If that isn't possible, then you have the option of staying with Noah's, accepting the credit they offered you and push back the date. I agree though, that this would put a very sour taste in my mouth and I don't think I would feel comfortable or trust them.

Or, book a new venue that is comparable to the price/occupancy of Noah's for a new date. I would insist on getting your full deposit back and if they give you a hard time, make sure that they are well aware that you will be leaving very detailed reviews on Wedding Wire, Zola, The Knot, Google, Yelp, and every other forum you can. Especially since they are a new establishment, they will want to avoid such a negative review, as so many engaged couples rely heavily on said reviews when choosing their venue.

As to your guests, I would try and avoid cutting the list at all costs, as a STD is pretty much a (part 1) of an invitation. I would have new STD's made and include a modified accommodations card saying something along the line of "Due to events out of our control, the venue we initially booked will no longer be in operation for the date of our wedding. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience."

Maybe make them pay for the new STD’s and see what vendors will be willing to move the date to June 2020- and if there’s a fee see if the venue would be willing to cover that....

I wouldn’t uninvite anyone. It is not the guests fault that the venue screwed up. Is there any place that would be equivalent to the venue you’ve got booked that is open? Would the venue you have now be willing to pay for their inconvenience of such short notice? That might help.....

    so sorry this is happening!

Oh my! I am so sorry. I am assuming you have already booked your other vendors so if you push the wedding back they might charge you or not be available then. I would try to find a new venue that is comparable to the original venue ASAP. I wouldn't uninvite people though unless you want to hurt those people's feelings and possibly ruin relationships.

If you can find a venue that has your current date open I would just keep it the same. You’d likely be able to negotiate a better price or upgrades with a new venue on such short notice since they’d be unlikely to book a empty date with this little time left.
If you have to push pack the date it’s not a big deal. Just send out new save the dates with a small blurb explaining the change of venue due to circumstances beyond your control. I’d also verbally spread the word to friends and family.

Please tell me they refunded you every dime you paid them.

I would find a new venue ASAP and then send out new STD's or if you have another contact point with your guests (e-mail, social media, wedding website, etc) inform the guests of this change in venue once it's confirmed. Once the new venue is confirmed, reconfirm the new location with all your current vendors and ensure they have clear directions on where new venue is located and time line for day of if you already have that done.

I'm so sorry this happened to you however, like PP's have said, you might get a great deal on a new place! Stay positive and things happen for a reason and maybe this new place is the ideal wedding location for you in the first place!! Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Well unfortunately you can't un-invite people you already invited. That $2500 can help reissue save the dates and invitations (if those are already made with the other date). I wouldn't waist the $2500 credit if they can give you like a written statement of when the event center will be finished and since you can't find anything else that all works..? So pushing back the wedding a little but everything else staying the same. I'm sorry to hear you are going through this!

I don't know anything about where you're located or what this Noah's company is like, but have you asked them if they can help you secure another location? Something similar happened to my cousin's daughter. Less than 2 months before the wedding, they found out the large venue had booked a huge 3 day festival-type event for the weekend of the wedding. Technically, they could still have the wedding in the space they contracted for, but there were potentially going to be SERIOUS issues with crowds/parking/noise/etc. The bride's mother made it clear to the venue those issues violated their original contract and she expected the venue to figure something else out to make things right. The venue owner used his contacts to find something else for them -- and, honestly, it was SO MUCH nicer. It typically would have cost nearly twice as much, but the original venue owner worked with the new venue so it didn't cost the bride's family any more than the contract for the first venue. The wedding location changed by probably more than 90 minutes drive, and they had to change all the hotels, send out updated invitations, etc., so it was a pain, but in the long-run it worked out for the best. Good luck!

I would take your money and make them pay you damages! They are throwing a huge wrench in the plan at your expense.

Huh? How were they even taking bookings for 2019 if the venue is not to be done until mid 2020? Furthermore, did they just now realize that the venue wouldn't be ready for your wedding? That is seriously bad business. Well it is what it is but for sure I'd reject the credit in lieu of a check with your name on it to use for whatever you feel like AND they should pay for the STDs you will need to resend or redo. This is painful and certainly not what you want to be dealing with right now but I wouldn't change your guest list or anything. Believe it or not you probably can still find a venue and get a good deal on it since your wedding day is so near. Venues with cancellations or open days they have yet to book or having a hard time booking tend to give them away or offer great discounts! You do need to make a decision as to whether you are going to keep your date or postpone as soon as you can. I hope everything works out to your joy and happiness! Keep us updated.
