Wedding venue from Hell

Michelle, on September 22, 2021 at 10:40 PM Posted in Planning 1 10
I am having the absolute worst time with my wedding venue. About a month ago I reached out to the wedding coordinator and found out she had been fired. Apparently she said things about my wedding and services that we would have that were not in my contract and that’s my fault. The venue will not honor anything and now I had to pay an additional 40k. Pretty much I booked during covid start and got a lower rate because it’s a new hotel. They said they were changing the prices because things are normalizing and I stupidly enough didn’t make sure it was in the contract previously. This is a new hotel in NJ by Marriott but I have never been treated so poorly and even cried to the manager today. Now he says in the fee the waiters are not included! That either I accept what they give or I can cancel my wedding that hundreds of guests booked hotels there already.

They said I can call the better business bureau if I want. They are absolutely disgusting. I feel they are going out of their way to be nasty. Said I couldn’t see a menu before hand or taste. Also we wanted a different cake and said we can only have their plain Italian one and can’t order from a bakery.
Is it me or do you guys think I can try to do something? I was considering reaching out to Marriott but I am afraid they will treat us even worst at the wedding that’s over 200 guests.

Oh I would definitely be reaching out to the corporate office. That’s very unacceptable. Have you finished paying? I wouldn’t care how many people booked. I would explain that there was a change of plans and find a new venue. I just wouldn’t want that stress.

First I’m sorry you have to deal with this stress! They are being absolutely horrible and that much added cost is appalling. I would definitely reach out to Marriott directly, with a brand new hotel they won’t know that the staff are behaving like this to customers until someone tells them. Do you have emails or any form of writing from the previous quotes and promises that were made? They’re not as strong as being included in the contract but it does give you more traction in talking with Marriott directly. Or, if you have a decent cancellation/refund policy, the hassle of finding a new venue might be less troublesome than dealing with the current venue.

That is crazy!!! I would not have my wedding there. You are paying them and they shouldn’t treat you that way. That’s absolutely ridiculous. And then telling you to call the BBB. They are a joke. I wouldn’t trust them with your wedding girl.

For now I am done paying but they are charging extra even to breathe. Now my guests that booked at the hotel tried to get early check in requests and are told no even if they pay extra.

I have text messages and emails from the previous employee but they don’t care. I’ll do what you guys are saying and call Marriott directly tomorrow to hopefully get better results. I haven’t tried looking for another venue because I didn’t think I’d find one last minute but at this point I’ll check.

Is there anywhere else you can go at short notice that is close to the Marriott? If so, maybe you could try going there? Otherwise I would also ring head office and complain and see what they can do for you.

Omg, for a wedding that is next month? That's awful, I would definitely be contacting a corporate office because that is completely unacceptable.

Corporate office for sure! be kind but firm. Before those types of calls I always find it helpful to write down my talking points so that NOTHING gets left out. Put emphasis on the fact that you were mislead by the first person, weren't notified of her firing and your coordination changing hands, were treated poorly by current staff, and that once they realized that you were mislead they never worked to resolve the issues or given a full account of the new information and are instead getting it piece by piece. (at least that's what it sounds like by your post)

Really think about what you would like to get out of this conversation. Talk to your FH and come up with what you would like and what outcome you would settle for. That way you don't have to think about that while on the phone.

Let us know how it goes, good luck!

I think as a company even if she was canned for saying things that were untrue they likely would have to work with you at least somewhat for an event that is next month.

This almost sounds like the hotel is going against the corporate policies. It can't hurt to contact Marriott Corporate to see what their policy says. Also go over your contract with a fine tooth comb to see if they have the "right" to charge an additional 40k. . .the have to honor their contract with you. Really 40k more to do anything seems crazy to make you pay that. . .no matter how big or expensive you've already paid.
