Wedding Website "Our Story" Help

Katie, on April 6, 2016 at 10:00 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 33

I am really struggling on how to write "Our Story" on our website. Perhaps some of you could give me some insight on how to word everything? Our story is kinda weird because we officially met 3 years prior to the first time we hung out.. It’s kinda strange because my best friend in college was crushing really hard on my FH who happened to be her lab partner. So of course as her best friend I heard all about FH. As her lab partner FH heard all about me. Btw FH was never into her he only saw her as a friend. We met briefly one day but it was just a quick hi and that was it. Well about 3 years later (best friend got over her crush and had a boyfriend by this point) she threw me a surprise birthday party. Since it was in the same town that FH lived she invited him out even though I really didn’t KNOW him I just knew a lot about him and vice versa. Well of course we hit it off right away and went on our first date the next day. How the heck to I word all of this lol?

This is how I did mine. I did not specify how we met. https://www.weddingwire.com/weddings/5082934/wedding_new_website#!/website/10744774

We weren't sure how to write ours. We met online. The rest is history lol. So, instead we decided to each give a perspective about how we met, the proposal, etc. Just a different way to get the words down. You don't have to do the full blown details of your meeting, you don't even have to have that in there. You can write about anything, or nothing. We each answered how we met, when I knew they were the one, the proposal, and what I am looking forward to most on our wedding date. Here is an excerpt from what we did (it's really cheesy, I am warning you)...

When I Knew He/She Was The One

B: I knew Holly was the one when I moved to Philly after 5 months of us dating and we no longer lived a town apart. Holly was (and is!) the best thing in my life and I knew I needed to spend the rest of my life with her.

H: When Ben moved to Philly, I knew that it would either help or hurt our bond. It ended up only making us closer, and I realized how easy and happy love could be! I got a job in Philly as soon as I could so that we could be closer and grow together even more. It was a done deal!

We divided it up from his and hers perspectives. I wrote a paragraph about the first time I met him and how I feel about him now, and he did the same.

We didn't go too much in depth. Those who are invited know one or the other if not both of you.

If it makes you feel better, "our story" involves me dating one of FH's best friends in high school, ending that relationship, FH hating me for the biased information he was fed, then slowly becoming friends again three years later, with the fourth year being the one we actually started dating.

So for us, I put something along the lines of "Dan and Courtney met while seniors in high school. Dumb, young, and naive, they didn't know at the time that what started as a mere chance meeting would blossom into a whirlwind romance." Followed by where our relationship began.

"We met in college through xxx but did not connect. Three years later, xxx invited fh to a surprise party she threw me and this time, we did indeed connect as we went on our first date the next day. We are forever indebted to xxx for bringing us together!"

Three paragraphs. How We Met, When We Started Dating, and How He Proposed.

Here, you can see mine! Our story is seriously NOT cute, but we tried to curve it so it sounded a little bit better...

theknot.com/us/swinwedding (also excuse the cat pic. we haven't gotten our engagements yet, and also haven't actually sent anything with the link out so we just put it up because we are weird)

We skipped the "our story" part on our web site. We've been together forever, and most of our guests know that. I like Mrs. Faith's idea, though, should you decide to include one. No need to go into great detail, especially about mutual friend's uber-crush.

@Katie, thanks! I'm an English major and worked as an editor for awhile, so flipping stories is one of my strong suits. But I definitely know where you're coming from because I struggled immensely trying to figure out how to make my story not sound so bad.

    Mine's at Chrises.us.

I didn't put a lot. Most people know! I did a couple sentences on where we met, and a couple on the proposal. That's it.

We skipped that part on our wedding website as well. Too difficult to explain and we had been together for 5 years already.

We did a "How we Met," "About the Bride," and "About the Groom" sections. I've seen people write their proposal stories, too, but ours just isn't wow-worthy enough to put it on the site.

As far as how we met, it's decently scandalous. FH and I met at work and had an instant connection. The catch? I had a boyfriend if 2 years I was living with. Do I mention my ex in my story? HELL NO. It doesn't matter anymore. And he's not a part of our story.

I second Tina's suggestion. Just enough that they get the timeline without spreading dirty, outdated laundry around your wedding.

OMG I LOVE THAT @VJGaff! Not sure I'll include the part about "jenn" liking FH because she is the MOH but I love everything else! The best part? FH works in science lab now too!

Just glaze over the 'official" first time you met. Skip to "My friend threw me a birthday party and invited her old lab partner from college. We hit it off immediately."

Here's ours. You can check it out for ideas.

We did a Welcome page, About Us page, Wedding Party, Wedding Events, Accommodations , and an FAQ. The "about us" page has three information blocks in total, Two are small information blocks about my husband and I. The third block is how we met.

    @Mrs. Ronco,

I love the FAQ part. I feel like it covered all the bases. Such a cute, resourceful idea! (oh yeah, don't mind me, I just stalked it all. sorry!)
