Wedding/guest attire

Carla, on October 29, 2021 at 8:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19
As I'm planning my wedding both sides of the family are asking what colors are we doing for the wedding. At first I didn't mind telling anyone but now a lot of them are saying that they want to match with the wedding party. Now I almost want to change my colors because I don't want everyone dressing like the wedding party. Am I being mean or is that just kind of weird? I just feel like that is the wedding party's time to shine & not blend in with the crowd.

I do think it's odd they deliberately want to match (unless you're from a culture where people do this). Are these people who asked to be bridesmaids/groomsmen but you said no? Or just attention-seekers in general?

Oh that is strange. I’ve asked people what their colors are before, specifically so I can AVOID those colors.

Honestly I'm thinking just attention seekers! I've never heard of this in my life! These are mostly cousins on both sides that have absolutely nothing to do with the wedding besides being invited. I didn't think it was a big deal to tell anyone our colors scheme until a lot of them started saying they are gonna find something to much my wedding party. I thought it was kind of weird!

In that case, I don't think you need to change your colors, but maybe don't tell them anything else about the wedding.

I'm so glad that I'm not just going crazy. I literally had sit & think if I was becoming a bridezilla because I really will not allow this to happen. I can't understand this for the life of me why anyone would want to do that!

It's customary in certain areas, certain countries, especially in Europe and Asia . My fiance's family, especially his mother's side (french) asked us the same question because they traditionally wear the same color or different shades of a color at weddings ... but another color than those the WP members are wearing, so I don't mind.

In your situation, I wouldn't tell them what the colors are and I would 🤞 that they would not match the WP.

That's weird. I agree with prior posters, just don't tell them any more wedding details.

That’s weird. I’ve asked before because I don’t want to accidentally match the bridesmaids …that feels awkward !

I knew I couldn't have been the only person that thought it was weird.. lol I would never go to anyone's wedding purposely matching the wedding party.

That is strange. Generally people ask colors to avoid them. They know they are not supposed to match or blend. But you have no right to control what your adult guests wear.

That is odd indeed. I have always looked at the invitations to see what colours they show so that I don't wear those colours. Do you have time to change your colours to something else now?

Yes its very strange & obviously they don't know because they are trying to do it. At my wedding I have a right to do as I please & I have put in nice group chat asking everyone not to wear the same colors as the wedding party. Most understood but we still have a few that just want to do what they want. Thank you kindly for your input.

My FH & I have been going over alternate colors already. We aren't getting married until May & we are using the venue's decorations. All we have to do is buy flowers and candles which we haven't yet. And my bridesmaids will not be getting their dresses until December or right after the new year, so we still have time to change our colors if needed.

I would like to dress the same not with everyone at the wedding, but let's say only with some group of people or be like a couple of people who will be my friends, I think it's cool. And being in the same color with everyone is terrible.

That is understandable. My FH & I haven't definitely dressed alike going to a wedding, it just was not the same color as the wedding party. I guess I just don't want to look out in the crowd & over half of it is in the same color as us. I think that would just be way too much. I also believe that's the time for the wedding party to shine, so if everyone is in the same color they are just gonna blend in with the crowd.

My family wants to know because they want to blend, not match specifically, but they don't want to stand out by wearing a color that clashes with our theme colors.

That's good that you have time to change them. I wouldn't let them know the colours if you change them as they will probably want to match with them.
