Wedding/marriage Superstitions

Shellycherea, on April 3, 2018 at 6:34 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 35
Someone just told me a new one which I thought was HILARIOUS. Apparently, having a female officiant is bad luck and will lead to divorce. I have never heard this before and I find it so funny and completely misogynistic.

What wedding/marriage superstitions have you heard while planning?

I have never heard this before. I have an officiant who is a woman. I still hear that the groom should not see the bride before the nuptials are to take place but we are doing a first look so there goes that lol.

That's awful. It seems like it could be used to discrimination against women. It definitely makes me want to get a female officiant to fight against gender discrimination. Smiley sad

The only one I've heard is that it's good luck if it rains on your wedding day.

    ...

But it rained on my mom's and it ended up in divorce Smiley xd

I heard I could get out of bed the morning on my left foot or we'd divorce.

I had to wear my veil covering my face or we'd divorce.

His mother told me I had to wear something black or he'd die before I do (she even brought me a gorgeous black dress from Argentina but my big ol JLo a$s didn't allow for that).

Never heard that but I heard that I guess woman is not suppose to wear pearls on her wedding day because they represent tears or something like that lol but I had some pearls in my necklace and earrings. Also heard about groom not seeing bride before lol but we did a first look.

That is one of the worse ones I've heard! I have a female officiant, but I'm not worried bc that is just absurd!

FMIL told me it is bad luck to wear your wedding band before the wedding! She's super Irish so she's chock full of superstitions!

That one definitely sounds like a way to discriminate against women. How ridiculous.

I always heard the groom can't see the bride in the dress before the wedding. I met someone whose groom wanted to make her dress for her and she refused because of that superstition. Personally I don't believe any of that and plan to have my fiance with me for dress shopping since he is one of the few people whose opinion I value.

What?! Never heard that before. Two of our female friends are marrying us, so I guess it's double the bad luck for us. Smiley xd

Lol in my culture when you're engaged, you wear the wedding band (and engagement ring) on your right hand to show that you're engaged. This confused many people I know outside of the culture. The guy also has to wear his wedding band when he's engaged but on the right hand as well.

My parents didn't care which hand I wore the e-ring on, but they were adamant about my wedding band staying on the right hand until we actually got married.

Has anyone heard that it's bad luck for someone to put on your engagement ring? This happened to me and I was shocked. I felt weird wearing my ring until my Italian coworker rotated it left on my ring finger (an apparent tradition) because it's good luck. I'm good now lol

I've heard about no pearls on the wedding day. For every pearl it is a day of sadness, and bad luck for the marriage .

That's really interesting! FH actually wears a claddagh as his engagement ring and it is worn on the left hand, but the heart is faced out when you are engaged and would be faced in once you're married (once we're married he will actually be replacing it with a traditional wedding band though).

I'm curious of what culture you are a part of if you don't mind sharing! I love learning about how cultures do things differently!

Burying a bottle of bourbon at your venue a week before (or is a month) will ensure a sunny day.

Getting married while the hands of the clock move upwards (like 11:45) will bring good luck

It is etiquette and superstition that you can't drink to a toast that is about you. It is asking for bad karma.

I also have the wedding band on my right hand cause otherwise the marriage is doomed (my greek grandmother taught me that one).
Can't see the bride before you walk down the isle.
It is bad luck to congratulate the bride on the engagement. You can only congratulate the groom.

My officiant told be that the bride is not allowed to participate in the rehearsal because it's bad luck. I can watch but not participate lol. I think I'm still going to participate. It's my handfasting ceremony. I'm the one who knows Gaelic. Plus I don't want anyone else having my wedding cords tied to my FH. Oh well. I've heard plenty of superstitions.

I was told as a kid that if you lick the spoon or eat from the pot you're cooking with, it will rain on your wedding day. Smiley laugh
