Weight loss and dress alterations...

Heidi, on January 25, 2019 at 9:15 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 13

When I ordered my dress I was about 10 pounds heavier and I plan to lose another 10-15 pounds before the wedding. I finally figured out what worked for me (counting macros and weight lifting with some cardio) which is great and I'm gaining confidence BUT I ordered a size up in my dress then bc it was slightly tight in the hips when I sat down. Now, I'm afraid that its going to have to altered 3 dress sizes. Is that even possible???

Depends on the material and your seamstress's experience. Some can be altered 1-2 sizes is what I've heard. Mine is satin (very form fitting) with not much wiggle room to be let out. At least getting it taken in is easier than let out

Depends on the dress. Most dresses can be taken in about 2 sizes with no issues. I think mine was 2 sizes. It really depends on the detail.

The best thing to do it talk to a professional as soon as you get your dress so you can be realistic about what can be done.

It definitely depends on the fabric and designer. Mine is a lot of lace and I have also lost some weight so I asked the boutique I got my dress from and they said they can take it down about 2 sizes. I would ask the store where you got it from, they may have an answer for you.

Okay, I feel better knowing that they can be taken in about 2 sizes. Hopefully its not much more than that. Its a crepe material that is very simple and form fitting, but does have detail in the way the seams line up - you can more tell on the front of the skirt.

That's really pretty! Definitely consult with a seamstress and ask their opinion and what their experience is working with that material

A good seamstress can work magic. Mine had to be taken in quite a bit. Also I hope you ordered your dress based off your measurements and not how the sample size fit you. Sample dresses are extremely stretched out and not truly representative of the size.

Good point, Kelly! Yes, I ordered off of measurements.

I started to work out a lot so I could lose weight before u til I realized that most alterations people can’t alter the dress so much past the dress size you ordered!

I just had my first fitting and my tailor (male seamstress?) didn't seem to see a problem with taking it in at least a couple inches on each side- I don't know what it translates to in terms of sizes. The bridal store urged me to order a size that sounded much bigger than what I thought I'd need, but I wasn't brave enough to go against their recommendation. My dress is very different material than yours, though.

This is super pretty! Beautiful dress!!! Crepe is a nice material to work with, and given the paneling on the dress (the "seams" on the side, and two on the front) there's plenty of places to take in the dress and not lose the shape/ form.

Do you have the dress already? If not, I wonder if you could call the place you bought it and explain the situation, and see if they can remeasure you and order a smaller size.

That said, I had a friend who lost 4 dress sizes and had a very intricate dress with different fabric types, and her seamstress was able to do it. I think you'll be ok and the dress will be able to be altered no matter what!

My read a review on the girl I am using as my seamstress, and she altered a dress that was 6 sizes too big. So I believe as long as you find a good seamstress anything is possible!

The sample size dress I bought was a size 8/10. My perfectionist seamstress bemoaned how the dress bodice did not align properly when I showed up for my first fitting. She swore out the designer in Russian and asked me if I was planning to lose weight. I told her I was going to lose about 8 pounds, and she told me "come back when you have lose those pounds." She was a little abrupt, and a little hard, but when I came back she very quickly changed everything about the dress. I would have freaked out seeing the bodice totally disconnected from the skirt, but she told me "don't worry, I have this. It will be fine." The bodice was taken in to the right size, and the skirt was just pinned in only.
With a skilled enough seamstress, almost anything is possible. It's a matter of money, and making sure you have a talented seamstress.

It's always easier to tighten a dress than to let it out. As my FI's father says: "As the Rabbi said: I can always cut it, but I can't make it longer."
    Don't worry.

I’m going through something similar. For some unknown reason the bridal salon decided to order my dress in a size 22, my bridal size is a 14/16. I recently went in for my first fitting after not seeing my dress in almost a year. The gown was literally falling off my body it was so big I wanted to cry. My seamstress told me not to worry and when I come in for my second fitting it will be much better. She reassured that she was going to make it fit like a glove. I can’t do anything now but wait. I think you have to find a really experienced seamstress and just trust that she/he knows what they are doing.
