weight loss and wedding dress

Victoria, on October 17, 2013 at 11:26 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 14

So I have already bought my dress, and ordered a 14. I am wanting to lose about 25-30 lbs before the wedding. How much can dresses be taken in!? Will it be able to taken in enough if I am able (hopefully!) to lose the weight?

My consultant told me when I bought my dress that they could take it in up to 2 sizes. I don't know if it's the same for all dresses or not.

My dress was ordered and then i lost about 30 lbs - and it actually didn't have to be taken in that much.... it was mostly adjusted around the ribcage/bust area...but it depends on the style of your dress as well. I wouldn't worry... lose as much weight as you want ! and any good seamstress will adjust your dress as needed. you will look great either way !!

Where did you order it from? I tried my dress on about a month ago had it in an 18...went back yesterday to actually order it and the 16 fit perfectly. My consultant said that when my dress comes in January, if it's too big, rather than have me do alterations on it..they can just order a smaller size.

Considering you have even more time than me until your big day; they may be able to do something like this for you too!

The general rule is up two sizes, and down four. There's about 10-15 lbs difference between sizes, so 20lbs of weight loss is about two sizes down.

This will be different for all dresses though. Dresses with a lot of lace or beading will be harder to alter, so you might not have as much leeway. A bride on here had a really tough time with her keyhole back, too, so complicated patterns will also make it harder. Once your dress comes in, it may not be a bad idea to meet with a seamstress to see what she thinks. If she says "no" or seems hesitant, take it somewhere else. Seamstresses have different levels of experience, so what maybe impossible for one, may be a simpler task for another.

Depends on the dress. If it is simple it can be adjusted more. If it has beading and embellishments you can be limited. I was told mine can easily go down 4 sizes. I'm pretty sure even if I lose weight i"m not going down 4 sizes in my rib cage so, yay! (I have an empire waist ball gown)

Also I ordered a 14 as well Smiley smile

The first time I tried on my dress It was a size 20 and I wasn't ready to purchase yet, when I went back I was a size 18 and now that I went back and have said yes to the dress. I put it on layaway due to me loosing weight, (which what was advised by my lady that was helping me). When I finally purchased In full I ordered a size 14 and I put a corset back and the lady said I could move up 2 sizes or down 2 sizes and the dress will be fine. So depending on the design I'm thinking most dress can be alter 2 sizes. And the 25-30 lb can be done I've lost 45lb and my goal is 60! Happy shopping!

Depends on the dress, and how your body distributes weight. If you get an a-line and most of the inches lost come off your hips for example than you may not need alterations compared to someone who loses in their bust and waist with the same dress. I actually gained 10 lbs and didn't need to get my dress altered at all, because it was in my bust and hips, so my dress still fit(even better in the bust than it originally did). They can take them in quite a bit, so I wouldn't worry too much unless your dress is super complicated and hard to alter.

Well you probably shouldve held off on ordering it if you knew you wanted to lose so much weight, but yea I think they could easily take it down at least 2 sizes and you'd be safe. 30 lbs sounds like a lot more than 2 sizes though?

Yea, I had to buy my dress, and really doing all wedding planning, early because I will be heading to Uganda for about 4 months and will be gone during the time you traditionally buy your dress, book venue, etc. I am also a student and trying to avoid wedding planing during school as much as possible!

Your best bet is to talk directly to the person who will be doing the alterations. Shop around for an experienced seamstress who you are comfortable with. I went wedding dress shopping when I was heavier as an extra "motivation" to help me to want to lose the weight.

My alterations lady had no problem taking my dress in. I had numerous fittings and each time (up until this last fitting) she would have to take it in. (she pinned it rather than doing all the work and then having to re do it.) This last fitting I went to, was the first time the dress was actually taken in and not held together by pins and clips. It looked so much different than when I first tried it on. I fell in love with it all over again.

I'm with Christina Q. I recently lost another 5 pounds and it all came off in my bust and and back, so I had to scrap part of a bodice I cut for my halloween costume because it just didn't fit. I would have had to redo the neck line and it would have looked like c*rap. normally for me, no once notices a weight loss/gain unless it's something like 40 pounds.

2 sizes is often only about 1/4 inch in each seam, and bridal can be even more extreme.

if you can hold off on your order, I would. alterations are costly, and can really change the look of a dress. you've got 2 years, and what you love now may change a lot over that time.

I originally was looking to make my dress with straps and a v neck, but I totally changed the bodice look to something easier to deal with in case my measurements changed a lot.

I don't know a easy answer, guess this is why they call the alterations basement of Kleinfelds 'the pit' because things can get to crazy!

I am having the same worry and its why I have waited to order dress, but its "do or be in trouble" if I don't do it next month Im told buy several salons. I want to lose 15lbs to be a size 4 and I want to get close enough to the true size so Im not worried about alterations later. I feel your angst!

    It depends on the dress.

Mine can be taken in as much as I need (went from a size 12 to a 6). It's going to take major reconstruction, even though it CAN be done. So, I'm debating now if I double the cost of the dress by going ahead with the alterations or see if I can find a dress cheaper than the cost of alterations.

My first fitting isn't until Sunday so I don't know exactly what it will cost yet, but I'm going to David's tonite to see what my options are there.
