The first steps are figuring out roughly the size of your guest list, the acceptable total cost, and possible venues. There will be two locations unless you merge them: the wedding ceremony site and the reception. If you find the total costs too high on initial estimates, you then have to arranging your priorities on venues, decor, catering, etc.

Securing the ceremony and reception location(s) is generally needed a year in advance but you can get more detail on timing when you check out the venues. So that task becomes the biggest. Also, check what will be the additional costs and issues involved with venues -- including a cancelation fee -- or return of deposit.
