Were you surprised by your proposal?!

Brittany, on January 7, 2019 at 11:53 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10

For anyone who has just recently said yes (Congrats! Smiley ring ) or those who've been planning for awhile now:

Were you totally surprised by your future husband or wife proposing? Or did you kinda see it coming? Feel free to give me some swoon-worthy proposal stories - it's so dead at work today Smiley laugh

For me, I did sort of know it was coming. It's very hard for anyone to surprise me with anything because I am a planner by nature. I sort of wish I wasn't like this to be honest. I've had two baby showers (both intended to be a surprise) and was not surprised either time Smiley sad

I knew FH had a ring, so it was just mostly a matter of when. "When" ended up being December 25, 2017 - FH had had my ring for almost a year at that point! Lol

I knew that it was going to be coming very soon as we had talked a bunch about waiting for about a year of dating before getting engaged. So I thought he was going to do it on our anniversary. He ended up doing it about 2-3 weeks before it on his birthday instead! So I was surprised!

So FH and I are high school sweethearts. We were together through college, were actually engaged before and then ended our relationship. We always kept in touch and were kind of back and forth, and then after 4 years we found our way back to each other. After about a year and a half of being back together, we started to talk marriage again and I always knew he was looking at rings but I tried not to think about it so that I wouldn't constantly be thinking about it and wondering if every romantic situation he was going to propose lol. About 2 weeks before he proposed (I now know he already had the ring) I had a breakdown to him about how we were getting older (we are 30) and by time we plan a wedding it will be another year and then by time we have kids, blah blah. He calmed me down and then 2 weeks later, thanks to my "putting it at the back of my mind" and being oblivious to my surroundings, he totally surprised me in front of all our friends while we were in Lake Cumberland Smiley smile

I had a feeling it was happening soon because my fiancé started acting a bit sketchy the months prior. Not like a bad kind of sketchy or anything. He not so smoothly got my ring size during a vacation in ocean city and then the Tuesday before he proposed, he asked me out of the blue for my dads phone number. I didn’t think too much about it. It just added to my suspicion.

The weekend of my birthday though, me, my then-boyfriend, his sister, and her husband went up to Niagara Falls to celebrate both my birthday and his brother in laws birthday. He ended up proposing to me infront of the falls our first night 😊😊😊

    Works dead over here too.

I kinda knew it was coming but not really. We have been together for 10 years now (Since we were 16) and we always talked about getting married but he never wanted to commit. So I finally (jokingly) told him if we weren't engaged by the time he was 25 (6 months after I turned 25) I was over it all and done. He always joked with me doing fake proposals and stupid thing like that, which is his character, but not funny lol. So finally the night before my 25th birthday he was acting weird and finally was like I have to ask you something and got down on one knee and said will you... send in my class ring to be fixed (eye roll) I had some select words to say but ended up laughing. The next day, my birthday, he was acting weird again. He made me breakfast and we were talking about our plans for the day, it was raining so we had to change them a little. He seemed upset that we couldn't do what we planned. As I was opening gifts he got me he went into the bedroom saying he forgot a gift. A couple minutes went by and I ended up walking into the bedroom to put some things away. When I walked in he looked like a deer in headlight lol and all he said was well you ruined the surprise. I had no idea what he was talking about. He then got down on one knee again and asked me to marry him. DIDN'T SHOW ME A RING so I again told him to stop being a jerk and some other things and left the room. He came out and was like well im not joking and handed my the box with the ring in it and walked away. I was shocked and felt bad. He came back in and was like well are you saying yes or no lol. I said yes... only thing I didn't like is that hes a loud mouth and literally my whole family and all of our friends already knew! O well. The next year on St. Pattys day he ended up surprising me again when I wasn't paying attention he asked to see my ring, I took it off and gave it to him, and in front of a whole crowd of drunks in a bar he proposed again... we got free drinks Smiley xd never a dull moment with him.

    #TeamPlanner Smiley xd

In our case, we had had "the talk" in many occasions. We are in a LDR so I kinda knew, and really hoped, that he would propose on that trip. I had decided to stay with him for 2 months, while I got a certification and I was just very curious about the proposal. We celebrated his birthday and nothing, we celebrated mine and nothing, we went on a hot air balloon ride AND NOTHING. I had lost some hope by then.

One normal day he took me to the restaurant where we had our first date. We had a wonderful dinner and when we got home (after I took my makeup off and was wearing my PJ's) he proposed. He caught me off guard COMPLETELY, which is REALLY HARD to achieve and it was just perfect.

It was a surprise. I knew we were heading that way and we talked about going to look at rings a month or two after I finished grad school. So I had noo clue that he had already had my ring for a couple of weeks by the time I graduated. He planned a trip to the grand canyon to "celebrate my graduation" the weekend after. He actually ended up proposing the second day after a hike.

I was completely surprised even though just hours before I had checked our shared bank acct balance and seen he had made a purchase at a jewelry store. I didn’t really put much thought into the idea of him proposing though and figured that if he did it was going to be a week later when we went to visit my family for thanksgiving. However the same day he bought the ring was the same day he popped the question November 16, 2018. I was so shocked before I said I couldn’t stop asking him if he was serious lol.

Mine was kind of a surprise--and I was the one proposing. At the beginning of 2008, Massachusetts was the only state with same-sex marriage--and it was only available to Massachusetts residents. Then Massachusetts opened it up to out-of-staters. California also started allowing it, but it wasn't clear whether it would last, or what the status of marriages would be if it were eliminated. I ended up proposing three days after the change in Massachusetts.

Because of this, NotFroofy and I really hadn't discussed marriage at all. And while I knew she wanted to be with me for life, marriage was still legally complicated. (For example, so long as our home state didn't recognize same-sex marriage, we could never get divorced, so we had to be really sure.) And I wanted to make it clear that we would stay together even if she didn't want to get married.

I was so obviously nervous that day that she thought I was mad at her. Finally, I just sat her down on a daybed and blurted out, "So, what would you think of the idea of getting married?" Fortunately, she still said yes.
