Westchester County, NY Park Weddings?

Daniele, on May 8, 2014 at 8:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

My wedding is in September and I have absolutely no idea where I'm having it. All I have is a deposit on the reception hall. Originally, I was going to have a small ceremony in Central Park - but now people are saying they wont come (the elderly, like my grandmother, I understand - but people who are more than capable just don't wanna make the trip). The ceremony package is $1400 , and I feel that's a hefty price to pay for no one to show up. I can't find any information on how to obtain a permit to have a wedding ceremon in a park in Westchester, nor do I even know if it's allowed (some spots only offer permits for pictures - no ceremonies). I tried calling the parks department and got transferred to about 10 different people, all of which were in the "wrong department." Has anyone had a wedding ceremony in any of the parks here in Westchester? If so, how did you go about it?

Central park is kind of tough; how about the Queens Botanical Gardens? We had a number of ceremonies there last year, and it's not a fortune, easy to park, and obviously, pretty.

Fort Tryon Park is also very pretty, more accessible than CP, and goes by the same rules, I believe.

    Where is your reception?

My reception is in the Bronx, at Maestros Catering Hall. I'll look into Queens, I just wanna make sure that it's all easily accessible since it was a problem before.

I spoke to Michael, my officiant who was there last summer, and he said it was easier than CP. I know it's so frustrating to try and get anyone to give you information about any public parks.

It really is! There's a spot in Bronxville, right off of the Bronx River Pkwy - it's beautiful, has a lake, a bridge, gorgeous trees and flowers. All I wanted to know is if weddings are even possible. I got transferred from the parks department to the town of Bronxville to the county clerk only to be told it's not Bronxville, it's Yonkers (although the exit clearly says Bronxville) and I need to speak to someone from there. I just hung up lol

I know that park; I used to work in a church in Bronxville. Bronxville is part of Yonkers. It really is pretty!

Does it have to be outside? Maybe you could have your ceremony in one of the rooms in Maestros and have everything in one spot.

We were thinking that but I prefer to have it outside - if it really comes down to the nitty gritty, we might just do pictures outside and ceremony inside.

I'm originally from the Bronx and I'm drawing a blank on outside venues. Does the Bronx Botanical Gardens do weddings? Maybe check with them.

I was a bridesmaid at my cousin's and she got married at Villa Barone and had her ceremony, cocktail hour and reception inside. During the cocktail hour, we all went to Pelham Bay Park and did pictures Smiley smile

I'm going to second the Fort Tryon Park suggestion-- its in Northern Manhattan about a 15 minute drive from your reception venue. Also parking within walking distance (5 minutes) to the ceremony space, all paved. The only issue I would foresee is if someone couldn't do stairs (e.g., if anyone is wheelchair-bound), since there are stairs up to where ceremonies are usually held.

Bronx BG does, but I think you have to have the entire thing there.

Oh I just emailed BG asking whether they just do ceremonies haha. Villa Barone is really nice, just a little out of my price range Smiley sad Maestros gave me an awesome deal, 55 pp for buffet style and open bar (partayy!)

I did look into Fort Tryon, we're gonna take a drive over if the weather permits this weekend. I also called Yonkers parks dept and now have a contact who is going to get back to me on the Bronxville location. Fingers crossed!

Update: Yonkers does not offer the option to have wedding ceremonies in their parks - photos are permitted only in Schrimshaw and Untermeyer.
