What are you doing with your pet while you honeymoon?

Kerry, on July 11, 2011 at 2:31 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 16

FH and I went home to Michigan to visit last week and boarded our cat at his vet. I paid $200 so he could have his own room with a tv, cat tower, and window. The last time we boarded him was in Oct., and he was only 3 months old.

Long story short - our cat was so stressed out he developed severe gastroenteritis. They did an xray (to make sure there wasn't a blockage), bloodwork, and then got him on a round of antibiotics, fluids, and anti-nausea meds. $327 later (plus the $200 for boarding), my cat is now at home and is on the mend.

Our plan was to board him over our honeymoon, but that's clearly not an option after this. We don't know a ton of people so having a friend take him isn't an option either. Anyone have any experience with pet-sitters? I'm thinking keeping him at home would be the best thing.

I'm super excited I have something else to stress about that's wedding related. My cat is my baby and the last thing I want to do is worry about his well-being. Smiley sad

Well, we live on an acerage with outdoor pets. We had someone stop by everyday to feed, water and play with them. But it generally ends up being one person designated to feed, water and play once per day, and they usually stop by twice, along with other people who just come to play with them. So, they get 2-5 visitors everday we're gone LOL

Perhaps it was to much stimulation that cause the stress? Maybe it was the TV? My cats hate the TV (when they were inside cats)

FH's cousin is dog/house sitting for us. Our pups would not take well to being boarded. We also had to have someone the pups were familiar with since they are all protective of the house.

We are either going to have someone come and stay at our house or put them in the pet hotel at petsmart.

@FMS - sounds like your pets have it made with all of the visitors. Smiley smile

I don't think it was the tv that stressed him out. It didn't have sound and only displayed programs about fish and birds (LOL).

Our cat is a bengal, and he craves attention. He follows us from room to room and is pretty much spoiled rotten. I think being in a room alone the majority of the day, and smelling/hearing other cats may be reasons to blame. Typically he would keep his food down all day, but would vomit everything up over night.

I have some serious guilt about leaving him. I can only imagine what will happen when I have kids and need to leave them with a sitter. Smiley winking

This was a big concern with us. we have 5 chickens, a ferret, a snake, 2 dogs, 4 fish tanks and a pond. The end decision was to have his mother stay at the house to take care of everything.

Most of the pets are low maintenance- fish are all on automatic feeders, the snake gets fed once a week, the chickens have an automatic water thing, and their food needs refilling once a week if we fill it to the brim but eggs should be collected daily. the ferret needs his water and food refilled once a week or so. Its the dogs that were the main concern. they need to be fed twice a day and do not do well some place else due to the whining and barking. At home is the most comfortable place for them so this is where they will be staying! and to make things better- shes free!

I've had good luck with in-home pet sitters. Cats get freaked out by a change of venue, so having someone come in is usually best for them. (Was for my prior dog, too.) Maybe you can look for a housesitter who will also look after your cat? Anyone who needs a place to stay (who you trust) who could also look after your kitty?

I could never imagine boarding my dog. He has so much energy!!

I don't know yet, but I figured I'd ask my FMIL if she'd take care of him either at her house or ours. They only live about a mile and a half a day. My dog gets fed two times a day - morning and at night so we have a back yard fenced in so all she would have to do is stop by twice a day to feed and let him out in the backyard to run around, use the bathroom and such. If she can't do it then I'll just keep asking until someone we know says they will.... hopefully someone we know will say yes lol.

Our dogs love their sitter. They stay w/her whenever we go out. And she already told us she would be free for our wedding and honeymoon.

She does her own doggie day care and it's not a kennel so they are not boarded they roam free in her basement.

Our cat would be more comfortable at home, so we'll likely ask a neighbor to stop by every other day.

We have left her alone for up to 3 days before (with lots of food and water) and she is totally fine.

I am 99% sure that if we are gone for a week - she will sleep for most of the time and it will feel like one night to her. I don't think cats have much of a concept of a day ending and beginning aside from their owners getting up to go to work and then coming home at the end of the day...so if we leave and then come back a week later, I'm not sure she really knows the difference haha

My dog is going to my moms. It will be like a little vacation for her too because she'll get to play with her dogs! She loves going there to visit!! Maybe you could have a neighbor come over and feed him and spend a little time with him every once in a while?

Oh, I'm so sorry about your cat! Glad he feels better now. We have a turtle with a 70gal tank, so taking him somewhere isn't really an option, we're thinking about having FBIL stay at our house while we're away, but we're a little scared of turning our house over to an 18yr!

When I go on vacation, I leave the cats with plenty of food and water and have someone stop by every 2-3 days to make sure they have food water and their litter isn't disgusting. We will probably have a neighbor or my FFIL do it for us. The 2 dogs will stay at FFIL and FMIL's house.

If you need to hire a sitter I would ask for plenty of references. I use to pet sit for people quite a lot and took care of all kind of animals. I did know the people though through my profession, so they already knew and trusted me. SO lots of references!

Cats are funny sometimes too with strangers ..but it does sound like a much better option then boarding! I use to have a bengal and they in particular can have selective personalities.

We will ask FMIL take care of our 2 cats. She is over here at least once a week and actually just did this past weekend when we had to leave for a family emergancy. It seemed to work out fine. We look after her dog as well too when she goes out of town. If she can't we are planning to ask BM and MOH (they are married) if they will baby sit for us.Assuming I am lucky enough that my little dog is still in our lives, she will have to go with us. She needs a lot of extra care and I won't trust her care with anyone except FH and that wont work! lol
