Hello All, May sound like a ridiculous question, but what do you think of when you hear "immediate family"? I know that by many definitions, it is your parents, siblings, grandparents, children, and spouse. But, whenever I say immediately family, I also think of my aunts, uncles, and first cousins....

Hello All,

May sound like a ridiculous question, but what do you think of when you hear "immediate family"? I know that by many definitions, it is your parents, siblings, grandparents, children, and spouse. But, whenever I say immediately family, I also think of my aunts, uncles, and first cousins. Sounds random, but I have a reason for asking. :-)

I usually think of my parents, fh/spouse, siblings their spouses, nieces and nephews and grandparents. According to legal definition "An immediate family member is defined as a parent; sibling; child by blood, adoption, or marriage; spouse; grandparent or grandchild."

I like to think of all my relatives as immediate family cause I love them all, but when I truly think about immediate family (and this sounds morbid) I think of what my work bereavement rules are. Immediate family constitutes, parents, siblings, spouse and children. Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins are called Extended Family.

Everything up to any living grandparents, but only down to first cousins(remember tho, their kids, are your second cousins), and aunts and uncles that are immediate blood(as in, parents and grandparents siblings, but not their spouse's siblings or other "in laws")...

I would think of only parents, siblings, and children as "immediate family." Grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews would be family, but not immediate family.

Generally "immediate family" means parents, siblings (full and half), nieces/nephews, and grandparents.

For those who grew up really really close to their aunts/uncles and cousins, they can consider those as well :-)

Immediate family is your parents and your siblings and you.

To me it's my parents and sister. I have way to many aunt, uncles, first cousins, second cousins and so on to count that as immediate.

Obviously (from above posts), it depends on the family.

Why do you ask, FutureMrs ?

In my opinion, immediate family are those that grew up in the same house as you and your partner. So, parents, & siblings. Some might say grandparents too but I think of grandparents as more on the extended side. But that's just me. I know for our situation, my fiance has a lifelong friend and a very close family that he considers immediate. So, it really boils down to the family dynamic.

Technically, I believe parents/children/siblings/spouses (including step-parents/children/siblings) and sometimes grandparents would be considered "immediate family". Anyone else would be extended family.

Now neither of those descriptions has anything to do with how close you are to the various family members.

Typically it is considered to be siblings, children, parents and spouse.

Also immediate vs extended family only dictates where they are on the genealogical tree and has no correlation to how close or distant your relationships are.
