What is a good wedding gift?

Neffe, on August 2, 2018 at 12:05 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 43

As a wedding guest, what type of wedding gift do you typically give? Do you tend to stick to the couple’s registry, do you buy an off-registry gift, or do you give cash?

When I'm shopping for a bridal shower I look to see what's on their registry and see if I can find something similar at a cheaper price if it costs a lot or get the stuff off the registry. For the physical wedding I give them cash.

Yes same, typically the registry is for the bridal shower. It’s a pain to take a physical gift to the wedding so I always do cash for the wedding...

After receiving a handful of gifts not from my registry, I will always give the couple something they registered for in the future! Unless it's a close friend I know very well and can give them something personalized. But definitely a gift from their registry at the shower and then cash at the wedding!

If the couple has an extensive wedding registry, I assume they clearly would prefer to receive things from the registry, so in that case I choose something in the higher price range, purchase, and have delivered well before the wedding. If there isn't a registry or it's mostly small, more shower-type items, we put what we think is a generous check in a card and write a heartfelt note. I am one the posters who finds requests for cash, honeyfunds, etc., really cringe-worthy. I was raised with what I guess are very traditional etiquette rules (including, NEVER bring a boxed-gift to the wedding, always have it delivered ahead of time). I wouldn't buy an off-registry gift. (Although, I did back when I was just starting out, right out of college and a picture frame or wine chiller -- popular in the early 80's Smiley winking was all I could afford.)

For showers, I buy off the registry. I usually like to buy multiple smaller items, or try to complete something for the couple (as in buy the rest of the place mats or napkin rings or bath mats if someone else has already bought all the towels)

For weddings, I give cash every time. Its what most couples want.

Always cash (occasionally a check but not usually) at the wedding itself, and something off the registry for the shower.

I really wanted everyone to go by the registry because I spent a lot of time on it and put exactly what we needed on it especially because we have a certain theme for our apartment

So i agree with gift to the shower and cash/check to the wedding! Unfortunately, I have had 2 friends who have had their card box stolen!, so on the bright side the checks couldn't be cashed, but I am sure the cash was just taken. It is a super unfortunate thing! After the first one, I thought this is a freak thing, but it happened twice! Since then even if its a little bit inconvenient for everyone I opt to give a check!!

If the registry is large I usually purchase from there, as it seems to me like the couple wants/needs many items. If the registry is small I take the hint and give cash 😉

Either a gift off their registry or a contribution to their honeymoon fund. I don't usually bring a physical gift/cash because I figure it's a pain for the couple to transport or could get lost/stolen.

Yes, it's always easier to just purchase something directly listed on the registry!

We normally give cash. However, we attended a wedding this past weekend where we knew the bride and the groom just bought a house (both still lived with their parents before) and they needed everything (their registry reflected that). So we bought them a gift. I do love that the store let me include a note and shipped it directly to the couple so I didn't have to lug around a huge box to the wedding.
