What do you know about HoneyFund.com?

KiwiG, on February 6, 2013 at 2:15 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 23

My FH and I already have a house together. So registering for things we already have, such as kitchenware, didn't make much sense. We also didn't think we would be able to go on a honeymoon after funding the wedding ourselves.

This is where HoneyFund.com comes in. It allows your guests to help pay for the honeymoon instead of giving gifts. Seem like an interesting alternative to the typical registry.

So has anyone used HoneyFund before? How did it work out for you? Also do you think the guests would enjoy this alternative? And is HoneyFund a safe site financial wise to work with?

Im not sure, if i was a guest, and i couldnt find a registry, i would stick a check in an envelope and mail it to your house before i would put my debit card number into a site i didnt know. how would you let people know about your honeyfund registry?

I think the only downside of it is there is a small credit card fee. We are in the same situation in that we already own a condo and don't really need any household things. We just chose to not register. I think people will get the idea.

I'm in the same boat as you. already living together and no real need (or want) for household items. we've registered with Marriott (since we're already rewards members).

i'm not sure about honeyfund, bu i know that many of the honeymoon registries charge a fee for their service, some you pay, with others, the guests pay. so i would check that our because that's not something(the fee) i'd want to pass on to the guests. also, its another reason we went with Marriott, no fees.

She would have to create her wedding website and list it on there. Or word of mouth.

I thought about it but haven't done any investigating yet.

I personally would give a gift using that site. That's easy peezy and you're done! no, shopping for me!

Good luck...I hope you get the answer you're looking for.

I had a co-worker suggest honeyfund to me, she used it for her wedding several months ago, and said it worked well for her. It has the options for someone to pay by credit card (there is a fee but it comes out of what you receive, the guest does not see the fee) other wise it is a free site unless you upgrade your account for I think $35. It gives the guests options to send cash or check and sends you a "certificate" letting you know what your guest have chosen to send you.

My FH loves the idea also, but I would suggest to register somewhere else (very small) for those guest that feel the need to get a "real" gift. (my Mom is not a fan of the honeyfund) I think I have 4 things listed at Bed and Bath.

We just give $. Paying fees to anyone does not make any sense to me. It's not particularly common in our circle, so people who have used it didn't really find it useful.

So we are in the same boat and i looked at all the honeyfund websites but didnt want to pay a fee and it creeped me out a little just because i didnt know anything about it. So we booked through a travel agency. They have a honeymoon fund they set up an account for you have little cards that you send out with the shower invites and then people can call them or stop in and then they send them a Gift certificate. Check with local travel agencies or i know for a fact AAA does one too. Its great and you are helping local business' instead of shady online people! we also registered at one other place for some stuff, i mean when else can you register for $600 pots and pans and $150 sheets? lol

We are in the same boat, we own our house. I heard that some travel agents offer a honeymoon account for guest to give their gifts. I haven't found one yet; still planning the wedding we want to go to San Juan, PR.

I did a little research between honeyfund and traveljoy both are sort of the same, except honey fund takes i think 3.5% and traveljoy takes 7.5%. Now my first instinct says to use the one that takes less, but there is one big difference that you should know before you choose. Honeyfund after the guest picks a gift to buy you just directs them to put money into an account so it looks more like a cash deposit than buying a gift. Travelsjoy actually takes care of the transaction and at the end gives you the check minus the 7.5%. If anyone has information about any others please let me know i am trying to choose one myself Smiley smile

I am using Honeyfund! It's great and my friends used it for their wedding last year. It is a free site unless you choose to do upgrades. They offer a basic profile/registry which is all you need, or for like $30 you can upgrade your website where you have pictures and a pretty background etc. We didnt do that. You have a few options when you register- you can put anything you want on there: from hotel, travel, meals, tours, rentals, anything! But make it something fun- my friend told me the only things not bought were things like rental car, but everyone wanted to gift them a boat ride on the canals of Amsterdam! You can list it all out how you want, and you can do denominations as you want- ie 4@ $25, 1 @ $100, etc. Or do a couple separate entries like flight to europe- 5@ $100 and another 10 @ $50. Just give options for those who werent planning on doing a big gift or can't do it.

Cont- As far as how you get the gift, we and my friends did the cash/check option. Basically your guests print out a piece of paper that is cute and says we want to give you ________________ and you include the cash/check. Your guests can add a message on the certificate too. Its easy. We did it for our friends wedding. It basically then checks it off as being bought. Because they try to do a free site with minimal ads, they use paypal which charges a fee if you want it to be a credit card payment. So you can avoid that for you and your guests by doing it as a cash present. Which I liked better anyway because as a guest, then you are handing them a present.

It is perfectly safe to use and easy too. If your friends are the type to be offended by asking for money, then they wont use it either way. But it is a great way to have that dream trip you wont be able to have otherwise!

When someone chooses to buy you a certain thing off honeyfund does it take that off the registry?

I started a honeyfund registry a few months ago and only fleshed it out yesterday and it looks great. We finally decided to spring for the premium version, which looks impressive now that it's all done.

To receive money, there is only a charge if you accept money from a credit card. Whenever you go to a store and pay with a credit card, the store receiving the money pays a fee to receive your money from your credit card. This is the same thing.

You have the option to accept money via a credit card or not. Think about your guests and what's going to be most convenient for them.

As a guest, it was pretty confusing. but that was a couple years ago.

we were going to use it, but our Liberty Travel Agent set up a registry that goes directly towards our trip!

I've heard really good things about honeymoonpixie.com too- we may go with them because I think they take the smallest fee and people seem really happy with it.

Anyone used it? depositagift.com is supposed to be pretty good as well?

I am using Honeyfund and listing smaller, specific things on it. Things like museum membership, tickets to shows in town, etc. That way people are giving us cash but are still contributing to an actual gift. If you choose the cash/check option, there is no fee. It only charges you/your guests if you enable the credit card option.

Also, we have a smaller Macys registry as well. We have some options on there for people who preferred physical gifts. I know my mom - who is pretty old school about many of these kinds of things - has given one small physical gift and then one bigger gift on honeyfund for other weddings she has been to. I think people don't mind giving cash as long as it feels like they're still giving a tangible gift. It's nice to have ownership of something specific you contributed towards a honeymoon or towards a couple's life together.

I would hesitate to give cash if I couldn't find a registry (unless it was specifically mentioned/requested via honeyfund or elsewhere. I would probably just find a gift that was returnable unless I knew the couple well and had talked it over with them first.

My fiancee and I are in a similar position- we have already lived together for four years and we don't want to register for a bunch of household stuff we don't need. I looked into Honeyfund as an option but I really feel weird about it. First of all I don't understand how it works, even though I have searched the website for the answer to this question. Like, if we find a flight that is, let's say, $399, how do we link that to the site? There seems to be certain items that are very specific, like "dinner at Casabella's" but other items are vague, like "one unit of airfare" or something like that. Second of all it still seems to me like asking for money.

I've been looking into this same thing because thats what my soontobe husband and i would like and appreciate the most (with 2 kids its hard to find the time and money for just us to do something like this)

If you create a registry with amazon you can add a button to your browsers bookmark bar that allows to add literally anything to your amazon wedding registry. I just added a cruise and plane tickets (along with a couple random household items that would be nice to have) and its all FREE! No fees for creating the registry or anything!

I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to avoid fees without just sending around an email asking for someone to buy a couple plane tickets

Honeyfund is a scam. They automatically set your gifts to be only payable through gift cards. Now my husband and I are stuck with all this money we have to figure out how to use via gift cards. A huge pain in the tush. If you decide to use this site, please make sure you change the settings if you want to be able to move any money directly to your back account.
