What exactly does Chic/ Modern Wedding mean?

Danie V., on August 6, 2015 at 9:12 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

Good day ladies! I've been googling, pinning, knotting, and ww'ing for days to find out exactly what entails a "Chic" themed wedding, "Modern" themed wedding, and "Sophisticated" themed wedding.

I know what these adjectives are when it comes to fashion/ clothing - however, how does one incorporate these into floral centerpieces and other decor?

Any pictures, examples, and links would be appreciated!

These are all buzzwords designed for you to spend lots of money. A marketing company has come up with ways to market crap to people in the Industrial Wedding Machine and these are some of the buzzwords attached to it. People then go on Pinterest and find what they want is beautiful and of course it's DIY. What they don't tell you is those pictures are professionally styled, lit and shot.

I find that words are what people use when they are trying to describe an overall theme to their wedding. When you have a picture in your mind, it's hard to find the words to describe it so people will try to combine words to label their vision. But unfortunately, it means something different to everyone.

@JessieJV - I completely agree! I've never been the wedding type so I'm slowly warming up to all these trends and into "bride" mode.

@NJBride2016 - That is what I figured - but those who are helping me plan have asked me what kind of wedding we would like and all that FH and I can say is "We want our wedding to be like US" lolololol

From an interior design perspective, modern is a style of decor that typically focuses on minimalism, neutral colors, & clean design lines. Where as chic typically revolves around furniture and furnishings that are chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique.

The two can be combined or can be two completely separate design styles.

ETA: I tried to find some example photos of centrepieces that combine the elements of modern and chic.

@Danie - If you don't want to, don't worry about trends or buzzwords. Listen to your FH. Do what is you. Don't worry about "chic" "modern" or "sophisticated". Just make sure that your guests are properly hosted on your wedding day and that at the end of it, you are married. The rest is just icing.

@Missy - thank you! Those centerpieces look romantic. Maybe I'm just not well versed in design.

I really just want the event to look elegant, classy, modern, but nerdtastic, with an old school feel. We are both 25 but with very old souls (our first dance song is to the Bee Gees Smiley smile ). I guess I am a bit confused as to how to portray our personalities onto our wedding day.

You could ask 10 people what "chic" means in terms of decor, and get 10 different answers. You do you girl, don't pay attention to labels.
