What helps you sleep the night before your wedding?

Kelsey, on May 3, 2017 at 7:10 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 34

This may sound silly, and my wedding isn't until September but I have a lot of anxiety surrounding whether or not I'll be able to sleep the night before! I don't function well without sleep (who does right?) and I want a good nights sleep before the wedding to feel and look my best. How have people slept in the past with all of the excitement and nerves?

Date twins! And i am not sure what I am going to do yet. I think I want us to stay separate the night before. But havent figured all of that out yet. We both live very busy hectic lives so I think we will be fine falling asleep where ever that may be. Good luck to you!

Me and my maid of honor just hung out and honestly didn't talk much about the wedding. I didn't want to dwell and stress about it. We were friends since 9 years old so we just caught up and hung out.

I take melatonin when I'm having trouble sleeping so that will be my go to when my wedding day comes.

I couldn't sleep the night before. I probably got 2 hours of sleep. I was running so high on adrenaline that I didn't even notice till we got back to our hotel room afterward. My day started at 4am and ended at 8pm with me passing out lol.

Wine is how I plan to lull myself into a nice sleep. Or a sleeping pill. Depends how antsy I am the night before

I'm not planning on getting a good nights sleep the night before

I run marathons and half marathons and once read an article that said it's really the night before the night before that makes the most difference and weather you've built up a sleep debt

I was so tired from all the running around of the day that I just passed out. I did wake up super early though.

It didn't hurt that it was me and my best girlfriends, my daughter, brother and his husband in the hotel room chatting it up till super late. It was nice and relaxing just hanging out all night.

I am planning to have one too many glasses of wine. I usually get sleepy when I drink unless I'm dancing or moving around lol.

If it's legal in your state, weed.

That's bad advice. Do not drink a lot of wine the night before the wedding. You will be bloated, groggy feeling, and hungover, especially from wine. Drinking to fall asleep might help you pass out, but it is very bad for your sleep because it causes you to sleep harder than normal for a couple hours, then wakes you from deep sleep and you can go into REM, which disturbs your sleep. ETA: don't do weed, either, unless you know what you are doing and you know how your body responds. Sometimes, it can have the same effects as alcohol.

I take prescribed sleep medications due to current health problems, but I do not recommend anything except for talking to your doctor if you wanted to go on them. You could try an OTC med or Melatonin, though. Try to make anything you do that night low key and relax. Even try to meditate. Go to bed at a decent time and make sure your sleeping area is comfortable and don't use any phone or tv screens.

Don't use alcohol. It makes it easier to fall asleep, but your sleep quality will be much worse, so you'll still be tired the next day. I wouldn't do anything too far out of the ordinarily right before the wedding because you don't know how you'll react. The most I would do is taking some melatonin. Otherwise, doing things like taking a nice bubble bath and doing some deep breathing exercises will help you relax.

I'm actually NOT having a drop to drink the night before the wedding. That always helps me have a better sleep since alcohol tends to put me to sleep but wake me up a million times throughout the night.

I think I'll try some yoga, relaxing music and maybe a bath.

Also, if you have never taken melatonin before, I would strongly advise against it. I once took half a pill the night before a huge exam and had heart palpitations. Never again. Definitely speak to your doctor before taking anything you've never taken before.

@augustlawbride thanks for the tip re: 2 nights before being the most important. I will definitely keep that in mind and not drink that night as well. Might be hard since that's when we're having out rehearsal dinner.

I made sure that leading up to the wedding I was in bed at reasonable time so my body got used to the routine of falling asleep. From experience, melatonin makes me drowsy so I made sure I took it 2 hours before bed. I just took a few sips of wine while writing out a card that I was planning on giving to FH. It helped to just write all my excited/nervous feelings and then I fell right to sleep.

When I know I'll have trouble sleeping the night before a big event, I take 2 benadryl and listen to a sleep hypnosis recording (usually found on youtube). A bath before bed sometimes helps too.

Do something relaxing, maybe get a good workout in & take a hot bath with a glass of wine. I also like the idea of having a girls night to just chill! as long as its not an up all night party!
