What if dress is too tight the day of?

Eri, on September 11, 2020 at 5:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

So I had my final fitting yesterday and the dress fits perfectly - though it felt a little more snug than it did a month ago; I remember thinking "phew, I have some room!" last month, and now that room is gone (my seamstress didn't say anything about making adjustments to the top, so I don't think she changed it). But it's still comfortable.

Not sure if I actually gained any weight over the last month or if I just had too many carbs this week, but if I were to stay the same size from now until October 10th, I'd be golden. My worry is that.. what if I don't? I feel like if I gain any weight, the dress will be too tight.

I don't have any more fittings and am picking up the dress two days before the wedding.

Any suggestions on what to do if it's too tight the day of? I've read something about safety pins and fishing line, but not sure how that works exactly. Below is a pic of the back of the dress on a model for reference.

You will be fine! If you have your dress home, put it on every so often to keep track. That’s what I’m doing. And every time it still fits the same!

Just watch what you’re eating/limit sweets, drink a ton of water, and keep yourself moving.

I hope I do not sound harsh but I am in the same boat as you. My job is killing me and I want to stress eat but I am holding out because I have less than two months. You are less than a month away so personally I would be strict on dieting so you do not have that concern. Limit carbs and cheat meals. This is hard as the FH love our date nights but we have said to reach our goal weights and to budget we have decided no dates nights and cheat days or meals until the day of the wedding. It sucks and I am somehow staying strong but we both are telling ourselves how we want to look good. There may not be much you can control on the day of but this is something you can and luckily you have plenty of time. You got this.

You don't want to diet too much or veer too far off of your normal schedule because then you might have the opposite problem and have the dress be too loose on you. I recommend wearing it a few times before the wedding for an hour at a time (sit in it, walk in it, etc). This will ever-so-slightly ease the fabric so that it's comfortable and not too snug. I would also drink water and watch your salt and sugar intake the week leading up to the wedding. At my second to last fitting my dress zipped but was super tight. I was on my period, however and was still retaining water. At my final fitting a week later (which was a week before the wedding) it fit perfectly again.

I think I'd try it on every day if I had it here, haha! The shop is keeping it in storage for me and will steam clean it before I pick it up, so sadly that's not an option - though if I get worried enough, I might call them two weeks out and see if I can come try it on again, lol.

I usually just drink tea and water (no alcohol, pop, or sugary drinks except lemonade from time to time), so I think I'll be good there! Can't say the same about chocolate though! Definitely going to do our best to keep taking walks and getting outside. Smiley smile

Thank you! FH and I really enjoy supporting local restaurants (via pickup orders right now!), especially during this time, but truly healthy options are usually hard to come by! We eat pretty good otherwise.

I totally hear you on the stress eating though! I feel like I have to be extra careful with our grocery list this month, because between work and the wedding, it's so easy to just want to make pasta or something similarly quick for dinner.

You already seem like you have way more discipline than I do, so you should have no worries! Smiley heart

Very true! I've just wanted to stay the same size all summer, and even though I'm trying not to do anything one way or the other, I feel like there can be just enough fluctuation to make me worry. Pretty sure I've already lost the weight that I'm going to from stress (had people telling me I looked way too thin in June, when my alterations started).

What you said definitely makes me feel better, though! Even though the dress will be at the shop until two days before the wedding, I'll be extra careful that week.

... but maybe still pack some fishing line and safety pins in case, haha!

No I get it. It is not easy but I am forcing myself to cook more but I will say we decided if we do go out it will be healthy. He went to chipotle and we made healthy options and no chips. Tomorrow I will cook but we keep healthy stuff like cauliflower pizzas on hand. At least in the house we can control what goes in the house where outside there is temptation lol. We won't be close to how skinny we were when we first met but for me having lost weight during the quarantine and some more makes me feel better and if he reaches his goal he will feel better. I am only splurging for bridal brunch and bachelorette. Just think of how beautiful you want to look on your day and how perfect you want that dress to zip up. Maybe that'll motivate you.

If FH could eat Chipotle every day, he would lol. I agree though - at least their customizing allows you to address personal concerns, though I can never get the sodium down to a level I'm truly comfortable with, but it's so tasty haha!

I have this same fear! I got my dress on Wednesday, and my wedding is not for another three weeks. I'm so afraid it'll be too tight around my hips (my thickest area...). After this weekend, which is a mini bachelorette party weekend, I am having nothing but water and veggies lol.

If the dress fits now, I really dont think youd be able to gain enough weight before the wedding to make it not fit. Just avoid salt, alcohol, and anything that makes you bloat. Also seamstresses can alter the dress the week of the wedding, just try it on periodically to make sure it fits well. My dress felt pretty tight, but after looking at pictures it didnt look tight at all. Shapewear works miracles haha 😂

That's what I was thinking, but since it feels tighter than it did a month ago I was like... eeek. Maybe if it weren't such a form-fitting dress or if I was wearing shapewear I'd feel less nervous!

The shop is storing the dress for me, but maybe they'll humor me if I want to try it on again like two weeks out lol.

Mine was very form fitting as well. I definitely recommend shapewear even if you dont think you need it. And if you ask them to try it on the week of the wedding they should be fine with that and will likely even do a last minute alteration for you

What would be the benefits of shapewear if I don't actually need it?

I bought some just to see and it literally did nothing for me, and I couldn't find any that would be completely hidden under the dress. It has a super low, open back, with illusion lace on the sides, and I don't have any physical insecurities when wearing the dress without it.

I think I'll definitely ask them if I can try it on another time or two though!

Thats great! But I also couldnt find a bra that worked under the dress and I for sure needed one so thats why I wore shapewear to hold everything up. Not necessary though if your dress works without!

Oooh gotcha! Yeah, I went to grab one and my seamstress started laughing at me, lol. No bra needed with the dress, fortunately!
