what is a groom's cake?

Judi, on September 7, 2016 at 9:09 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11

I definitely have heard about them for years, but I've never seen one, and I'm not sure what purpose they serve. I know that usually pretty cool looking, and aren't as traditional or formal as wedding cakes, but when do they even get served?

I'm getting a surprise groom's cake for our rehearsal dinner. I'm not sure the actual purpose but for us, a lot of the wedding stuff is a lot of flowers, color schemes, etc aka things he doesn't care about. So I'm using the groom's cake as a thank you to my FH for helping with the wedding stuff. I'm doing a surprise LOTR themed rehearsal dinner for him, and having a hobbit house groom's cake to serve.

Its different depending on who you ask. I've mainly heard of grooms cake in the south(where I live)

We had one, and we served it at the rehearsal dinner. A lot of times it is served at the wedding along with the wedding cake but we also had a dessert table so it would have been too much.

They're mostly a southern thing at this point. They're sometimes served at the reception, sometimes at the rehearsal dinner. Traditionally a wedding cake was usually white and the groom's cake was chocolate and featured a hobby or interest of the groom's. My husband's an Alabama grad so ours was the Alabama A with houndstooth print (sorry, Lauren B).

I had never heard of one until a few days ago and I've been thinking of getting mine one. Surprising him with it at the reception, still debating on what kind to get him.

I believe it's more of a southern thing. All the weddings I've been to had a groom's cake and I'm getting one for my FH (something Florida State related, since he's a huge fan).

We're doing ours for the rehearsal dinner. But I've seen them served at the actual wedding as well.

Doing a small one for FH he wants chocolate cake but our wedding cake is vanilla (came as a package) so I thought what a nice way to surprise him! It will be simple small cake with a little Greenbay Packers dude or logo on top.

@brieliz, I love that cake! It's so damn cute.

They're just less traditional cakes that sometimes include a groom's interests on it. It can be served alongside the wedding cake or by itself. FH and I are making all of the wedding decisions together, including the cake, so I don't feel the need to give him his own special cake. If I were to go that route, I would just have a quirky wedding cake.

It's a fun way to inject a little more personality or show of hobbies. FH doesn't really like cake, so he's doing a stack of donuts!

It's definitely a southern tradition. It's more of a cake to reflect the groom and it typically isn't traditional at all. My FH is getting a Harry Potter cake for his. It will be on it's own table at the reception and he is in charge of decorating the table, he is very excited about it.

Here we serve it along side the cake at the reception and it's usually something fun the groom/couple is into. Also, at every wedding I've been to with one, if the main cake is your typical white wedding cake flavor with buttercream icing... The grooms cake will be a more non traditional flavor.

This is about the only thing FH has a wanted the final say in. We are going with something similar to this
