What is so bad about cake & punch

Please pardon the down-in-the-dumps attitude below... Smiley smile

I'm trying to budget for our wedding (way ahead of time). We want to get married July 2014. We are just starting out (he'll be 24, I'll be 23), and we are getting no financial help from our parents. I'm finishing off my BA and heading into a master's program. He's just finishing off his education and starting to work.

I hate feeling inhospitable, but I'm starting to entertain the idea of a cake and punch reception. We've cut our guest list a lot (we both have large families) and are trying for 50 guests.

In my family, just a cocktail reception would be severly looked down upon, as would not having a cash bar. I feel like there's so much pressure to entertain people and go all out! I feel like we're in an all-or-nothing situation.

All we want to do is get married. We've been together for 6 years already and don't want to wait any longer than the two years until 2014. It's important for us to just be married, rather than postp

I second what all the other ladies have said...a cake and punch reception is perfectly acceptable. I think it's a real shame that people feel pressured to have a wedding that is more expensive than they can afford; in my opinion, it's just silly to go into debt or deplete your savings for a big party. And I hate that people feel that their weddings aren't "good enough" if they don't have an elaborate, expensive event.

I hope you're able to plan a cake and punch reception without too much drama! As long as you let your guests know what to expect and schedule the reception at a non-meal time, I think you're fine.

Nothing at all! You have such a great outlook on on this, I just love it. Just make sure that your invitations clearly state what will happen, do it in the afternoon (as in NOT a meal time) and enjoy your sweet, intimate wedding with your closest friends. That is exactly what I would do!

If you are not having food, then at least have alcohol. Do a champagne and cake reception. I have never heard of a cake and punch reception...

My friend had a REALLY budget wedding and even she had two tables with appetizers, cake, cupcakes and champagne.

Nothing wrong with Cake and Punch reception at ALL!

I have been to DOZENS of them. And there wasn't any alcohol.

If our wedding wasn't during dinner we would have had one too ... just to cut costs.

Do what you can afford and you wont regret it!

Just put on the invites "cake and punch reception to follow".

I like champagne and cake. Great combo, very classy....no one likes punch ;-(

The concept is just fine though; a little tweek is all it needs! If you have 50 people, a case of champagne (do Frexinet at about 10 bucks a bottle) is going to way cover you (that will give you 60-70 glasses) will cover you. Add some sparkling water and call it a day. It's a great plan!
