What is the draw for Halo settings? I'm curious

Groomzilla, on July 15, 2012 at 2:32 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 23

I see so many 'Halo' settings...with cushion...round...etc center stones. What is the appeal to Halo settings. I wanna know!

    More sparkle, less money.

^^ Yes. You can pile up cheaper diamonds and call it a 2,000 carat ring. No offense to anyone.

For us, it wasnt about the money. It was about the "romantic, antique feel" of the setting. Just because we decided for a halo setting certainly doesn't mean we compromised on color, clarity, cut or carat weight. FH made sure that every diamond in my setting is of the same color (E) and clarity (VS1) as my center stone.

*sorry for the crappy cell phone pic!

They just suit my taste. I don't like side stones and I find solitaires boring. A Halo does not equal cheaper. Lower quality diamonds=cheaper.

It is just one of the trends that comes and goes.

I tend to think the same as Mrs S and Nancy that it is a way to get a "bigger" and more sparkly ring for a cheaper cost.

I don't mind halos so much. The trend that is becoming popular that I personally do not like is the diamond clusters, where multiple diamonds are grouped to appear as 1 larger diamond (example 4 small princess cut diamonds arranged and set to look like 1 large).

I have a 3 stone ring with an antique setting. Halo did not suit my taste either.

That's beautiful Christie. Right up my alley. lol Obviously not a "cheap" ring. smh @ that comment.

MrsO--I'm with you on those 4 little squares making one larger square. It's just not pretty to me.

Actually the halo is not a new trend. It's present in antique rings as well, particularly those with colored stones.

Not a fan of the halo style either. Feels too busy to me for everyday. I preferred simple and elegant. Halo became popular after Diana and Charles got married in the 80's.

Oooh, are we all sensitive today, I said no offense :-) I never said those rings were cheap, but most of the time they do put much cheaper diamonds in them but still to make them look very sparkly.

Donna, that's why I referred to it as a trend that comes and goes. As you said, it was popular in antique rings and then you didn't see it for a while. Recently, it has started to come back and be more popular.

I guess. I wouldn't call that a trend. To me, that's more like a staple but in any event, rings are just as individual as dresses.

Saying "no offense" doesn't take away someone calling a bride's dress "cheap" does it? lol

Could just be evoultion of taste/styles. Classic started as a gold band...the diamond companies (De Beers, etc) jumped in..and bands with Diamonds took over. I can totally appreciate Halos..but they weren't our style. I do think they can be used to offer an illusion of bigger Ct weight for sure, but one can just buy a larger diamond with poor color/clarity as well. So based on what the posts are saying, it's a matter of taste and budget just like everything else Smiley smile What ever style is on the FW's (or brides) finger, is the best ring in the world I think...

Groomzilla, I think you hit the nail on the head! We all love what we love and the look isn't nearly as important as the sentiment.

I know that my ring is neither expensive nor large, but I love it so much! A large ring would have made me feel funny since I don't wear a lot of jewelry and have only ever worn one ring at a time on my right hand (yes, I am wearing my rings on my right hand) because of my job. I would not trade my ring in for anything. Not only is it beautiful, but it was so wonderful to receive and I love the sentiment behind it.

Similarly, I love the simple gold band that FH chose. We do not match with our rings, but it makes him happy and it's what he liked the look of on his hand. As long as he wears it and marries me, I don't care what it looks like! Just want him to be happy.

I do think that halo rings are delicate and antique looking a lot of the time and are so perfect for some people. I love that antique feel! However, I love the simplicity of my solitaire.

I agree. When it comes down to it, the only thing that is important is that the person who is wearing it loves the ring. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences.

When DH and I were picking out my e-ring, one of my main requirements was I wanted something unique and different. I do like the look of halo rings, however they were just too common for me because of how popular they are recently. I swear every time I see someone on facebook get engaged, they have a halo ring. I love my ring, and the fact that I can look down at it and know that it is truly one of a kind makes it even more special to DH and I.

But loving your ring, no matter how "trendy," big, small, price, style, is the only thing that's important.

I was never really a fan of Halo rings, I just thought they didn't suit me. But when I was trying on rings, I was having a hard time (I guess I'm picky?? lol). So the jeweler had me try on a Halo ring. It was a little too big for me so she had me try on a smaller on with a antique setting and I LOVED it!!! I had to send it to be resized and I'm dying to get it back!!

My ring is a halo...smaller than some I guess (my FH looked long and hard for a ring to suit me in size and style and he nailed it) but I don't care what anyone else thinks of my ring because I love it =)

To me, a ring isn't about how much it cost. in fact, since i've been married before to someone who "how much it costs" or "looks ilke you can afford" was a big deal, i didn't want an expensive ring. i'd rather have a bigger wedding, a new house together, etc.

i liked how the halo setting was more sparkle and just opted for a non-diamond center stone. so i went with a more expensive setting and less expensive stone. i'm glad i did. there will always be opportunities (like anniversary when we have more money) to get a nice diamond...but i figure..why spend the money..all i care about it is how pretty it is,who gave it to me, and why they gave it to me.

FH did an awesome job. even though he wanted to the do the diamond, i said "save that $700 and let me get an expensive dress"
