That sounds a lot like what I was looking for as well! I love the natural colors and I love the true emotion captured in candid shots. Did you have an easy time finding a photographer who matched the style you were looking for?

I don't think finding a photographer was particularly hard because I follow a lot of photographers and photography accounts on social media and already had some photographers in mind before we were even engaged. Photography was the single most important aspect of the wedding for me. I researched a lot and we had, I think, 15 photographers in a spreadsheet that I narrowed down to find our photographer. Our engagement was pretty short (9 months) so some photographers were ruled out based on availability or budget. We squared away our venue and date first so I was probably looking for photographers just 6-7 months out from our wedding date.

I am overall really happy with our photographer. We still haven't done a full wedding with her because we ended up having a mini elopement due to Covid but are planning to have a wedding celebration this year. Working with her has been great and we love how our elopement photos came out.

If you are striking out on finding photographers online, I'd recommend following hashtag #[yourstate]weddingphotographer and #[yourstate]weddingphotography and similar on Instagram, with [yourstate] being whichever state/area your wedding is in. Its a great way to discover photographers near you!

Apart from the photos not being too bright or too moody (just not an extreme editing style), we weren't looking for a particular style so much as a good work ethic and someone who is organized. We asked to see example albums to get a sense of what kinds of photos we would get on the day. I remember a friend's wedding album basically had zero guest photos apart from the family photos. It was important to us to capture some of the guest reactions during ceremony and reception so we looked for a photographer that usually did that. (I think most photographers do, actually!)

Photography is also the most important aspect of my wedding for me (obviously apart from getting to marry my fiance!), so I totally understand the time spent on research. Sounds like you spent quite a bit of time to really determine what your options were. Awesome that you found a photographer who has worked out super well so far! I'm sure your full wedding photos will also turn out beautiful!

My fiance and I already found the photographer for our wedding (it was actually a super easy decision for us once my fiance found the photographer's website), but I agree that searching through Instagram is a great way to find a local photographer!

That makes sense! Photo style is important, but the types/scenes of photos captured is just as important too. I totally agree that getting at least some photos of guests (in addition to the bride and groom photos) is important. I would think that most photographers would do that, but if you look through their full albums and notice that they don't typically include as many as you'd like, it never hurts to ask them to include a few more.

Exactly! And don't forget to ask your family to sit in the first 2 rows and tell your photographer too, if you want to prioritize photos of family members. That all usually happens, but never hurts to remind people!

Great advice! I hadn't thought of that before (asking the photographer to especially photograph the people in the first two rows), but that's a good idea! Thank you for sharing!

I'm not looking for a specific style because I couldn't care less,. If the shots that are in our "shot list" are taken and we don't get poor quality photos, everything will be fine, to be honest! 😆.

But my partner did some research one day and she loves the "illustrative photography": This style is a blend of traditional and photojournalistic styles . It places emphasis on the lighting and background. The couple is asked to pose "candidly" in an (often) picturesque environment. For example: What Photography Style Did You Look For When Booking A Photographer? 1

She fell in love with this style and she wants us to have this style of pics during the 1st look , so we're going with her wish.

This is a cool style! I love the more candid moments (even if they are somewhat staged or setup), rather than obviously staged. I also wasn't really looking for a specific style when we were looking for a photographer. I love the natural lighting candid shots, and knew that I would just "know" the right photo style when I saw it. That's super sweet that you went with whichever style your partner liked! Is this a style that you also like? Beautiful inspiration pictures, I'm sure your photos will turn out great!

Since we're getting married in a botanical garden, we wanted someone who really knew how to get good images of nature. Those small, dainty details are special to us!

I remembered that the guy who took my prom pics in high school did a lot of nature shots, so I reached out and secured him even though he doesn't really do weddings. Here's a couple of shots he's done and one of my prom pictures from some years ago. I think you'll see what I mean!

Gorgeous pictures!! I'm glad you were able to book the photographer that you wanted. That makes sense about wanting a photographer who knows how to take good nature pictures, garden weddings are always just so pretty! I'm sure your wedding photos will turn out stunning!

Oh my gosh, I 100% AGREE!!! I definitely don't want photos similar to any of those either, lol. I told our photographer that I wanted some fun/funny pictures, but I meant more so funny/candid moments, not staged/out-of-character photos.
