What should my husband wear to a wedding I’m in but he is not?

Julie, on August 1, 2024 at 11:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
One of my best friends is getting married in a few weeks & I am in the wedding. My husband was of course invited, but isn’t in the bridal party. I have no idea what he should wear. For context, he does not own a suit, & doesn’t work in an industry where he ever really needs to dress up, so buying a suit would be a waste of money. He does own a few pairs of dress pants/chinos & a few button down shirts, but I’m not sure if that’s “dressy” enough for this particular wedding. Any advice?

Maybe borrow a blazer or suit. Another option is check the thrift stores so you don't spend so much to buy something. Buy something new and dressy and tell him he will have to do nice dinners with you to make his purchase more reasonable. Then plan a dinner soon after where he can get dressed up again.

Thanks for your comment! I probably should have mentioned this in my original post, but my husband doesn’t fit in “average” size clothes. He has to shop almost exclusively in the Big & Tall section because of his height. None of his friends are even close to the same size so borrowing something isn’t really an option. Thrift stores might be though, I hadn’t considered that!

My husband doesn’t wear suits ever either and works in a warehouse so obviously never wears one to work. I would say that, unless his size fluctuates, it is always helpful to have 1 suit in the closet so he could be prepared for weddings and funerals. You can sometimes snag a good sale price. My husband has had the same suit for like 10 years and probably wore it about 8 times. It still looks in good condition so he’ll continue to have it for the coming years. I think we bought it for about $300. Taking a quick peak at Macy’s website, they have some suit jackets for sale for $70. He can maybe just get the jacket and pair it with the dress pants and button down shirt and a tie. Ties really elevate a shirt/dress pants combo.

What is the venue of the wedding? That usually dictates the formality. If it's in the ballroom of a fancy hotel, it will be more formal vs a backyard type. An option would be to ask one of the couple getting married?

It’s at a restaurant that hosts formal events & the dress code does say formal. I’m just trying to figure out something that would be appropriate without having to buy something he’ll never wear again like a suit

OK so chinos and a shirt won't do it for this event. I believe you can find suit rentals, that might be the best option.

Can he just rent a suit? If the dress code is formal, he needs to be in a suit or tux. He can’t get by in slacks and a shirt.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I talked to the bride as well & think we have a solution figured out without needing to buy a suit he’ll never wear again!

Could you possibly rent something? Any nice tops that are more formal.

Personally I d buy a suit if he's really never gonna wear it again you can always sell it. But a suit is a staple item to have in the closet for weddings and funerals he wear the pieces separately too. Not sure when the wedding is but keep an eye out for labor day sales.
