What side do you stand on at the altar?

Bride2B, on January 1, 2018 at 11:14 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 15

Stupid question probably...but is there a traditional side that the bride and groom always stand on, or does it not matter?

The bride normally stands on the left and the groom on the right.

I don't think it matters...though in most photos I've seen it seems like groom is on the officiant left and bride on officiant right.
Again, don't think it matters as I have seen it the other way too

It is customary for the bride to stand to the left at the altar, though you may not be so keen on the reasons why. The tradition actually stems from the old days of "marriage by capture", when the groom needed to leave his right hand (his fighting hand) -- which he used to hold his sword -- free in the event that he should need to defend his bride from other suitors who may try to wisk her off at the last minute. Pretty dramatic, huh? Today, most couples still choose to stand with the gent on the right -- probably because they haven't really given it much thought. If you would like to mix things up, feel free to stand on whichever side makes you feel most comfortable. One thing to consider -- if you are having a religious ceremony, check with your officiant and make sure that changing your positions at the altar won't go against the beliefs of your church in any way.

Thanks for all of the info! Glad to know it's not set in stone, but I do like hearing the history/tradition behind it. I actually love this explanation and it goes 100% along with what I was recently told in a self-defense class, about needing to be better about keeping my right hand free.

Very interesting info! We had a religious ceremony so we stood on the traditional sides.

I think it also varies by culture. In mine, the bride is always on the groom's right during the ceremony as the queen stands to the right of the king. At least that's what my officiant, family members, and friends have told me lol.

It's funny because I actually prefer to stand on FH's left as he doesn't hear from the right ear but that's the way it's gotta be.

I told my FH that I wanted to be on his right for the ceremony because when we walk I'm always on that side of him. Besides, I'm his "right hand girl". Smiley smile It makes perfect sense to him.

Bride always goes on the left if you’re looking from the audience. I video weddings and have been to tons and this is always the way they stand.

I very rarely stand on the left to my husband. I wanted to stand where I always naturally align myself next to him.

I disagree, many brides stand on the right, as I did.

I think they usually stand on the left but it’s a preference thing now.

I will stand on the right. That's my better side. You'll see the ring better. That's where I stand when we are together. And I am part Jewish, in that tradition, brides stand on the right. Easy choice for me.

Stood on the right, following what is traditionally done at Jewish weddings (Psalm 45:10)
