What size should i be looking for?

Marieka, on December 6, 2023 at 5:14 PM Posted in Planning 1 7
As I’m previewing looks online, I don’t want to get my hopes up for the wrong one that doesn’t come in my size. I thought I’d just ask the community for a recommendation or maybe someone who’s the same or close to size with me can tell me what they did. I know I’m plus size but I don’t what exact number size. I’m currently 5’5 maybe 5’6 on a good day and last time I checked I was 278 lbs. Any idea of what size to look for?

They say your dress size is typically 2 sizes up from your typical pant size - while this is a good rule of thumb, it isn't always 100% true. I typically wear a 8-10 in jeans but needed a size 16 dress, so technically 3-4 sizes up from jean size for me.

Most websites have size charts to use as a reference point if you have a way to take your measurements and compare which size would work best for you, so I would suggest doing that if you're not able to try them on in person!

Gowns are ordered based on measurements. You need a bust, waist, and hip measurement to know what size you would need.

Take your measurements, or have a friend help. You can be the exact weight and height as others, but depending on WHERE that weight is distributed will determine the best size (and style gown) you should be looking at. Have fun!

I wear a ten in pants but my bridal consultant told me I was also a 10 in wedding dresses. It totally depends on body type! I went to David's Bridal just to try on some different silhouettes and get my size before I went to my actual bridal appointment. Highly suggest!

Your bridal size is going to be 100% determined by your measurements (bust, waist, hips, length, etc.). There is no "standard" bridal sizes either. Some designers are true to size, some run smaller, some run WAY smaller! Your best bet is going to be visiting boutiques and letting them guide you - the consultants are knowledgeable about how the sizes run for different designers and can pull the correct sizes for you. When you actually order your dress, they will either order the size that lines up with your measurements, or they will just send in your measurements to the designer and they will make the dress to those measurements.

Go by measurements rather than dress size. My measurements spanned across 4 dress sizes when I got my dress... I ended up doing custom made to my measurements in order to save a little on alterations in the end since they'll have you order to your largest measurement.

The odd thing that many brides are told is that the dress will be made for you. But your measurements are not taken and included in the order so that alterations would be minimal later on.
