What song would you have someone sing?

Karyn, on September 6, 2016 at 3:28 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11

So a family friend sings BEAUTIFULLY and I asked her to sing a song at my wedding months ago. Of course I got busy and then I kind of forgot. So I am just now trying to figure out the logistics:

When should she sing? I'm thinking sometime during ceremony but when? I am kind of set on my wedding song and my WP's.

Anyone know of any good songs? Originally I asked her to sing Ave Maria, but I wasn't set on it and she made a point to let me know she like learning new songs and would love to try something different.

I am at crunch time. I don't want to take back my offer but I feel like I have too much other stuff on my mind right now. Any thoughts? Thanks!

She is not doing it for free. She is the daughter of a very close friend and we will be paying her.

Are you having a religious ceremony? Can she just be the cantor for the whole thing?

Have her sing something she already knows- I wouldn't have her learn something new honestly.

It is not a super religious wedding. Not in a church. Perhaps I was biased with Ave Maria bc I've heard her sing it before. But if she sings that right before our processional though I feel like it wouldn't fit. Its like too traditional and then modern processional song (which is Thousand Years the Piano Guys version).

I didn't think about her doing a recessional for some reason. That could make things easier. Thanks!

I've been to weddings that have a song instead of a reading. In that case, I would choose something that speaks to you and your FH about your relationship or marriage in general. Personally, I like "Being Alive" from the show Company. The show is about a 30-something year old man who has been running away from marriage his whole life, and it is the moment when he officially figures out that he wants that/is ready for it. "Somebody need me too much/somebody know me too well/somebody pull me up short/and put me through hell/and give me support/for being alive/Make me alive" etc.

I've sung at friend and family weddings before. Is she going to have an accompanist? Common selections were Ave Maria (depending on whether the Schubert or Gounod version, her vocal range and comfort at performing with/without accompanist this may be harder for her), Nat King Cole.

One I've heard done a few times is The Prayer. Josh Groban and a few others have performed it.
