What to ask for on wedding registry?

milinovemberbride, on May 27, 2017 at 6:39 PM Posted in Registry 1 32

So.. I have never lived on my own before! There has never been a need. I went to school locally and my fiance went to the army. Now I'm graduated and moving out in October... for the first time..

Now, I've done all the checklists I could find on google but I want to know from you guys-- what are some MUST HAVES for the registry if I've never lived alone before that you wish someone had told you about? What should you ask for on your wedding registry?

ETA: also, our wedding registries are with IKEA and Target! Would you roll your eyes at this? I know my FFIL is definitely going to roll his eyes at IKEA LOL

Honestly, I'd just think through your typical day and add everything you'd need, plus maybe some additional cooking things. What comes to mind immediately is sheets, blanket/comforter, towel set, bath mat, shower curtain, shower curtain rings, cookie sheets, frying pans, pots, toaster, coffeepot, plates, cooking utensils, cutlery, paper towel holder, dish towels, drying rack, glassware, etc. Do you know where you'll be living yet? Some of this might depend on the size of your new place.

If you're truly starting from scratch, just look around at what you use daily to start: bedroom stuff (comforter sets, fans, alarm clocks), bathroom items (shower curtains, mirrors, towels), kitchen items (dish sets, appliances, knife sets, pot holders), living room (throw pillows, curtain sets, nice artwork, picture frames), etc. Use Pinterest to browse for more ideas. After you get started, you'll naturally find yourself saying "This would be nice to have" and throw that on too, lol. As for must haves, I think that all comes down to your day-to-day living.. everything else is a matter of your own taste and preference. Good luck, and congratulations on your first place Smiley smile

@kahlcara @OnTheWayToMrsA thank you! I have most of those things down, just checking to see if I'm missing anything and looking for a little wisdom :0)

Linens (choose spring, summer, fall and winter colors), decor, cookware (get really good pots) small appliances, dinnerware, flatware, stemware and glassware (formal and casual).

When you start your registry, do them by room so that you don't get overwhelmed. Start with the bathroom because it's the easiest. And definitely register for big ticket items (refrigerator, washer & dryer, etc.) And register at places that offer gift cards.

Don't forget to think about things you'll need for cleaning and laundry, too (vacuum, broom and dustpan, mop, bucket, Swiffer, laundry basket, iron, ironing board, hamper/laundry sorter).

Honestly, if you are truly starting from scratch, skip the purely decorative or excessive. You don't really need sheets for every season in a different color and all that. You only need basic plates and glasses, not to be stocked up like a fancy restaurant. Eliminating the excess makes it more likely that you'll get the gifts that you actually really need and less stuff that you'll have to buy yourself after the fact.

Also think of household things as cleaners laundry detergents, dish soap, garbage bags, & laundry baskets. Seems like little things but when you purchase these things it can be costly.

Check Pinterest, they have a ton of checklists for this! I used several when FH and I moved in together.

Honestly one of the coolest housewarming gifts we got was from our best friend... he gave us paper towels, dish soap, salt & pepper, etc... just random little things you never think of until you need them!

@OG Alecia the first three things I registered for were a Kitchen Aid mixer, a steam mop, and a shark vacuum.

Agree with most of the others, especially Victoria. I once gave a laundry basket of goodies (soap, softener, paper towels, ziplock bags in several sizes, paper plates, measuring spoons, plastic wrap, tin foil and other assorted goodies) to a childhood friend at her shower. She LOVED it . Still talks about it about 14 years later.

Susan - I love your idea! I'd add to it a kitchen trash basket. Perhaps another suggestion would be to do a trash basket with all the other cleaning items in it?

Outdoor entertainment too! Outdoor rug, cushions, solar lights, etc. FH and I also love extra large Brita filter, coasters, popcorn maker, fancy Pyrex Tupperware and our apartment doesn't have an ice maker so we got funny ice trays
