What to call your bridesmaids?!

Jennifer, on April 4, 2019 at 12:30 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

Hi all, so, I will be having my sisters as 'bridesmaid's for my wedding. However, my sisters are both in their mid-to-late thirties and 'bridesmaids' seems like a young term to describe them. They aren't married so matron is not a term I feel I can use either. Any suggestions would be great!

We have a gender fluid wedding party so it’s the bridal brigade and groom’s guild. We call them our BB’s and guildsmen/ guildswomen

My sister (40) is my matron of honor. My two best friends are 30 and 31 and they are bridesmaids. I don't think age has anything to do with it. Does it bother them to be called bridesmaids at their age?

Mid thirties bride here - bridesmaids ranged from 30 to 40 in age. No one had issue with being called a bridesmaid, so that's what I called them! I don't think age has anything to do with it unless they have told you that the term doesn't sit well with them.

My bridesmaids range from 23-38! None of them mind the term bridesmaids.

You can literally call them whatever you want! Smiley smile I'm calling mine mermaids. I don't care for the bridesmaids title and I wanted them all to have the same rank since they are all equally important to me. Honestly, it doesn't matter too much since we're not announcing the wedding party at the wedding. I mostly just refer to them as the bridal party or the wedding party.

It depends on who I am talking to...

If it is a vendor, I use bridesmaid as an easy to understand term. My bridesmaids are 2 cisgendered women. It's not accurate because one is married but they get it. The florist / dress place / etc understand what I am asking.

You can also use bridesman, groomslady, bride's person, groom's person, brideslady, man of honor, best woman, person of honor, best person etc...

I don't understand gender fluidity but I respect it because it's the person's wishes and usually reasonable.

Otherwise, I just say my friends. That's what they are. It's been that way for 2 decades.

I don't view bridesmaid as a term exclusive to "younger" women.

I agree. The word has no age limit, while " flower girl" does, just for instance.

I've never heard another term other than Bridemaids. Plus age should have nothing to do with being called something other than Bridemaids. I heard the term "bride squad or maids" that's bout it!

Crew of mid-thirties bridesmaids here. I just called them bridesmaids, this has never felt like an age-related term to me at all...and this coming from a girl who almost never described her now husband as a “boyfriend” bc of age haha

I don't think age has anything to do with it. It is a pretty generic title for anyone on the brides side of the bridal party. There are other terms used such as I Do Crew, Bride Squad etc but those are typically used for the bach party.

I used Bridesmaid (my bridesmaids are all older from 34 - 40, & 1x is married with a 20 year old) but some of the names on this are definitely fun - especially mermaid & bride brigade.

I agree with others that the term "bridesmaid" does not connote a certain age. I was 41 when I got married and my bridesmaids ranged in age from 40 to late 50s.

I agree with everyone else. Maybe just Sister(s) of the bride? They have the same duties as the MOH. My sister will be listed as sister of the bride. She will walk down alone, unlike my MOH.
