What to declutter before moving in?

Ann C, on January 8, 2020 at 11:22 AM Posted in Married Life 0 11
So, my FH and I have both lived alone in our own places for ten years. I have an apartment and he has a cute two bedroom house.
Now, I need to start decluttering so I can move in! What are your best tips? Wha are stuff you’ve gotten rid of?

For clothes, trash/donate anything you haven't worn in a year!

Go through all your clothes. Throw out everything with holes, stains, etc. that you've been hanging onto, and donate anything you haven't worn in the past 1-2 years. Figure out what you guys have duplicates of (blenders, plate sets, etc.) and keep the nicer one then donate or sell the other ones. Don't hoard things (it's easy to do) like old bath towels, mismatched plates, etc.

Check out Marie Kondo. She is a decluttering guru. She has YouTube videos, a Netflix show and a book! Very helpful in deciding what to do with things and if you need to keep something or not.

I donated so much kitchen stuff and extra appliances. You don’t need doubles of everything even though it can be hard to let go.

I'm terrible at throwing things away so I'm following this thread for advice!! Haha! But I am a moving pro, having grown up in a military family, so I can give you my favorite bits of advice for packing:

    1. Dust/wipe down everything you put into a box so that it's clean and you're not tracking old dust and dirt into your new home. When you unpack it it'll be ready to go! This includes any furniture, and be sure to wash any clothes, linnen or towels that aren't clean.

    2. You know those little cans of Rosé or Pinot you can get at your local package store? Go ahead and buy a couple, and maybe a couple beers for him (some fun ones - different brands, types, etc.) and then pack one away for each room. So put one in a random box you're packing for "living room" and put one in a surprise box for "bathroom", "kitchen", etc. That way when you're unpacking you'll find it and be able to enjoy a little Rosé and toast to your new home. I never remember what box I put them in so when I unpack it's such a nice surprise and I usually find it right when I need it LOL. (The trick is to not pack too many because then your day gets unproductive real quick -haha!) And if you don't drink, then just pack a little juice box or a candy bar - some little pick-me-up you'll enjoy.

    3. If you're donating items out, pick a place that supports a cause you're passionate about, and call ahead to make sure they can take what you're bringing (like, make sure what you're donating is appropriate for where it's going). Some places will actually come and pick it up if you ask them in advance, and if you have a certain amount of things. So start your donate pile early.

Hope this helps a little and good luck!!

I had a deceptively large closet packed when we moved in together. My FH sat next to me while I went through boxes of things like notebooks from college and old textbooks. We ended up donating so much - they saw us coming and just walked out to get the boxes out of the back lol. Definitely do clothing and cookware - we doubled up on a lot and tossed the lesser one.

We just moved into our first house together. Before moving I boxed up everything I hadn't touched in more than a year and donated it/ threw it away (except for my books). That was the easiest way I could think of to declutter the before moving in. We ended up hauling out a lot of junk. You don't realize how much you accumulate!

I agree with clothes. I feel so many of our clothes we probably don't even wear or fit but don't have the effort to go thru. After that id get rid of papers and misc things that are just there like freebies that never get used aha

I agree with all the PP. Go through your clothes and then see what you guys both already own. then decide which you want to keep. i would try and sell the nicer stuff and use that money to purchase whatever you need Smiley smile
