Super October 2022

What to do next?

Okay, so I still have over a year to plan, but I'm trying to get as much done sooner rather than later because we have super busy summers as it is and I know next summer will be insane trying to button things up for our October wedding. Plus my fiancé is like rarely home during the summer so it's nice to have stuff for me to focus on while he's gone.

So far we have:

- venue

- caterer

- photographer

- videographer

- officiant

- makeup/hair

- DJ

- DOC

- most attire, my dress is ordered, FH has an idea of what he and the groomsmen will be wearing, I know the color and fabric of my BM's dresses but won't look with them until later this year/early next year, I know what ring bearer will be wearing & have a decent idea for flower girl but we're waiting to order until the last possible minute since they're growing

- invitations, I'm a graphic designer so they were like the first things made lol

- a friend of one of the bridesmaids may be doing our flowers, but all of the other floral shops in the area can't do a consult with me until 7-8 months out so that's on hold

What else can I do to keep busy and get things in order? We're planning on decorating with real and fake pumpkins, so come fall I'll be looking into getting some of those for centerpieces. Others with a long engagement, did you feel like there was a long lull in planning as you got most things together?

Start putting some playlists/favorite song lists together. Your DJ will likely ask you for favorite and least favorite songs, etc. it takes a while to remember all of the music you like! 😂 that’s a fun one that can take up a decent chunk of time.

Oh that's a great idea! Especially with me being the music lover in our relationship I probably have more of an idea of what we're looking for. Thanks!

We had a long engagement and I was just like you, got everything big done fairly early! The music idea that Cool suggested above is a great one. We got a list from our DJ for what we would need music for, and my FH and I have VERY different musical tastes, so it took us a while to settle on songs, and we keep changing them still lol. I assume you have a guest list done already, so another thing I started doing was playing around with table seatings. Some people might find that to be a waste of time since we don't actually know who is coming...but like I said, I'm a planner, I know that's one of the hardest aspects, so I started ahead of time.

We did have a bit of a lull where we didn't have much to plan. Even right now, kind of lullish. I started reaching out to restaurants for our rehearsal dinner, I've taken a big part in planning our Jack and Jill which is next month, and I worked on my vows because we are writing our own. Does you caterer allow for food tastings? Our venue allowed us to go to as many as we wanted to taste food, so we went to 3, all spread out. We did one right away with just us, then about a year later we took my dad, and 3 months or so after that we took FH's parents. It allowed us to try their fall and winter menus and they did different things on each, so we had a good variety of food to try. Plus, food is exciting to us so we got excited about how delicious everything was. You can also start looking into cakes if you're doing a cake! Try to find a nice design you want so when you set up your tasting and order your cake, you know what you want. Do you have accessories for yourself (jewelry, shoes, hair pieces)? You could look into getting some of those items as well if you don't have them already. I also started with my bridesmaids' gifts fairly early so I could space out paying for everything, so if you plan on gifts, maybe start doing that as well!

This is all great, thank you! I've dabbled in the seating chart already as well lol. There's some groups you just know will sit together and it's nice to get a visual.

One of our favorite restaurants is catering and doesn't do tastings until like 4-5 months out where they have you taste what you've decided on and the chef will adjust accordingly to our suggestions. We actually just went there for dinner last night lol, so thankfully we're not too worried about a tasting before that. I haven't even considered my own accessories at all, so that's a great thing to look into!

You can also start making a list of specific pictures that you want for your photographer. Like my FH and I have a group of tight knit friends, but they're not in our wedding party so I'm going to tell both our DJ and our photographer that we want a picture with this group and the DJ can announce "members of the Herd friend group, please meet by the ceremony site for a group photo" or something to that effect.
