What to include in Registry?

Bride2Be, on November 15, 2020 at 11:36 AM Posted in Registry 1 14
My fiancé and I have been living together already for 2+ years in a few apartments. We plan on staying in the apartment we’re in now for a few more years until we want to have a baby and then we will move to a different apartment on a 1st floor and then eventually buy a house when we can save up for most of it. We plan on getting married in summer 2022 and we will be sending out STD this summer when we officially book our venue (out of state destination).

My question is what should we include/not include on our registry? It’s always been a dream of mine to be the “hosting family type” and I love to cook! But we probably won’t need that stuff until many years down the road. I know it’s always been customary to include things for your new home together but we don’t plan on being in a house until many years from now. So I feel like everything I would like to put on the registry would just sit and go unused until then. I also don’t want to put something on there now that I like and then later on down the road not have use for it? What would y’all suggest?

Bed Bath and Beyond has a registry list on their site to get you started.

If you want to cook big family meals and whatnot, start now with a new tradition. You don't have to wait for a house to entertain. Host a weekend meal at your place, whether once a month or per week. Don't wait till you have kids to start new traditions if something is enjoyable.

We host dinners a lot during the summer time & we keep it small (around 6). That way people feel better going out. I agree to start traditions now, that way it feels normal when the kids come along.
I would wait to start adding to your registry until it gets closer to your wedding date. You’re right about putting something on it now just to change your mind later.

Would you recommend adding a certain number of glasses, towels, napkins, etc? There’s only 2 of us and idk how many of things to get. Are we supposed to get rid of the old stuff like towels and such? I like having all matching things, but my fiancé is more of a hoarder keep it cuz it’s still good type 😂 I’m an out with the old in with the new type haha

On top of the hosting idea, game nights are pretty easy to have in an apartment! That way you can cook/host meals and then have a game night. We have a bunch of board games on our registry! It's fun and especially any college-age friends you have will enjoy them more so than "traditional" registry items.

Get the standard 8 glasses, full set of 4 large towels with 4 small. Look up online what sets usually come in and register with those numbers. Most people use the registry to update old items and donate them to a local thrift store.

We're in an apartment as well, and registered at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Crate & Barrel. Most of the items we selected were either upgrades to current items, or things we would save for when we get a house.

The Target registry had a few specialty items like a bluetooth speaker and things for camping (grilling accessories, hammocks, a cooler).

Crate&Barrel had pieces for entertaining, some cooking/home accessories, and a KitchenAid mixer.

Bed Bath & Beyond was more for small kitchen appliances, like an Instant Pot. The knife set we wanted was also on this registry.

You can definitely think about things to add to yours, but I wouldn't start seriously creating one until closer to your date -- stock changes rapidly, and you don't want your entire registry to be discontinued when it's time to start sharing it!

It's so fun! And Target has some really great looking ones that I've never heard of!

I included some pictures of some of the games we registered for!

This is a great idea! I didn’t even think about registering at multiple places. I always thought it had to be at one! I’ll definitely keep that in mind!

Oh definitely! More options just gives people that much more flexibility -- Bed, Bath & Beyond always has a lot of coupons, Target is pretty accessible for most people, etc.

Honestly, Amazon is a super popular option and I've heard good things, but I've given Amazon so much of my money over the years that I deliberately avoided it lol. Their variety, price, and speed is hard to beat, though!

A lot of places will also give you coupons to purchase leftover items yourself. (We ended up not having a shower and didn't get much from our registries, so I plan on using some of those coupons to get a few staples we still need. How I've gone this long without a basting brush is beyond me!)

It's very common to register at multiple stores. Not all stores are everywhere for those who prefer shopping in person and guests appreciate having a variety of ideas in a range of prices from $5 and up that fit with your interests/needs/wants.

I would include a full set of China at least 12 settings in a pattern that won’t go out of style and is easy to match with accent pieces. I use my China and silver flatware all the time!
