What to wear while getting ready?

Amber, on February 18, 2024 at 7:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
I have seen the robes and the cute pajamas that are satin while getting ready. I’m leaning more towards getting robes for me and my 5 bridesmaids. However, what do you wear under the robe while getting ready as the bride. I still want something that doesn’t need pulled over my head so it doesn’t mess up my hair. Do you wear button up pajamas underneath? Just bras? What do you suggest?

I got robes for me and my girls. We all wore pajama or lounge pants underneath because the robes were short. Under the robe, we just wore bras. The robe is meant to replace another shirt so you can remove it easily after doing hair and makeup.

Disclaimer, I'm small chested so results may vary, but I simply wore a button down shirt with no bra underneath as my dress had a low back and I didn't want any bra lines imprinted on my skin, especially since we did a First Look, so dress went on, then pictures started.

Be aware that unless you get the long plush robes from Target or Walmart, the cutesy shirt robes sold online strictly for bridesmaids do not stay fastened (the ties are intentionally made not long enough) and they are super short so they show off a lot of unwanted extra skin (both cleavage and butt areas), which many women are not comfortable with even when they are not plus size, but even in a group of mixed company where not everyone is close best friends.

The best results will be with a button up pj top or blouse from Target or Walmart with pj short, leggings or sweatpants they already own. Even for the pj tops, some ladies may prefer a bra underneath or else the buttons will pop. Whatever you/they decide to wear underneath should never go over the head unless someone is willing to have it cut down the front and discarded. There are countless bridesmaids and brides in pictures and videos on Instagram and Tiktok who wear negligees and T-shirts and other items that have to be cut off to protect the finished hair/makeup. But no one shows the aftermath of that side because it’s not glam, and that is what sets the unrealistic expectations.
Before you purchase anything, talk to them individually about their comfort level and the specific item that you plan for them to wear. Be aware that the robes/pjs (as well as hair/makeup) are not a thank you gift even though some brides believe they are and that an individual non wedding related thank you gift is not necessary, which is not true.
