What type of pens should I use to hand address our invitations?

Anyone have tips about which pens to use to address invitations? I don't feel like paying anyone extra to do it and I feel like printing them would take forever. Plus, this way it is more personal.

I splurged on blue envelopes with a specific design printed on the back in silver. So I hand addressed my envelopes in silver ink. I got the pen at the craft store for under $2 and it writes beautifully.

I was totally wondering about this for the past few days. Haven't decided yet. I'd love to use a fountain pen but haven't used one since elementary school...

Margaux, I only write with fountain pens, so if you need advice, let me know!

Well I never really thought of this. Maybe I am slacking. I just used a plain ink pen for my save the dates so Ill probably do the same as no one will notice and I don't think its something that really needs to be stressed about.

Just an FYI as a lefty, something that won't smudge? I always have that problem when writing.

I'm not doing calligraphy or anything fancy...just my normal handwriting. I think I'll go with the fine tip sharpie! I ordered the lettermate from Etsy to make sure it's straight. I did a practice one without it and it was so slanted.

I made the mistake of using a slow-drying ink pad to stamp the back of my STD envelopes with my & FHs address...slight mess. Make sure whatever type of pen you use, that the ink doesn't get smeared by fingers or other envelopes!

I printed on clear labels bc of my handwriting....I had a ton of compliments on them. I was worried bc it wasn't handwritten...but seriously, a ton of compliments!!!

    Don't stress.

I used a fine tipped Sharpie for my STDs and it worked great, no smudging or bleeding or anything.

The "new" Sharpie PENS (not the markers) are great. Thin, fine lines and they don't bleed at all.

I used a thick felt tip pen or a thin marker. It turned out great and I even got compliments on the pen.

If you print relatively neatly, you can address them yourself and they will look fine. Choose the pen that makes your writing look best.

In order to write straight, I used some extra cardstock to create an invitation-sized card with lines where the address/return address go. Then, when I addressed each envelope, I inserted the card with lines and could see through the envelope enough to write straight.

Labels are easy if you type them into the template and print them on your computer. I used clear labels and a cursive font. Make sure it's easy for the post office to read though Took me about 1 hour to type the addresses but then I printed them 3 towns for STD, invites and thank you's. Saved a TON of time.

Honestly, I never look at the envelope. It gets opened and tossed but the invite goes on the fridge so I didn't want to waste time writing them all out.

Very helpful tips, ladies! I like the idea of writing over straight lines, @May Bride. I'll check out the new Sharpie pens as well, @Kristen16. Thanks, everyone!

I used a calligraphy pen/marker to hand write all of mine (inner and outer envelopes).

What time frame did you guys send out your invites... Our wedding is in September. Alot of people are telling me not until middle of July, but that feels late to me. Does the end of June sound crazy?

@crazyinlove, our wedding is Labor day and I'm sending ours around June 20th, only because of the 4th of July.

Well, if it's for writing on an envelope, use something water resistant. The last thing you want is the envelope to somehow get wet while in the post and the address to be not readable anymore...

(Been there, done that, it sucks)

I used a calligraphy pen. We had marauder's map invites and I wanted it to look as "Harry Potter" as possible.

But I also have really amazing handwriting. For our STD's, I just used a G2 gel pen and it was fine!
