What went wrong on your wedding day?

ReadyToBeARathfon, on January 21, 2016 at 7:55 AM Posted in Planning 1 66

I've always heard something will go wrong. My first time married I almost had no shoes and my mil and mom got into moments before I walked down the isle. I'm trying to explain to FH that I won't be upset when something goes astray because it happens at every wedding. For those who have been married or were part of wedding, what crazy things happened or went wrong?

Lol my caterer brought us the wrong cake.

No biggie on our end because it was bigger than the one we ordered and it looked pretty. It wasn't the right flavor though. The other people didn't have enough cake though. :-\

    Oh Lord. Where to begin.

Don't even get me started on my MOH bs. I'm still salty.

A bridesmaid, let's call her... Laura (not her actual name), has an asshole abusive boyfriend. No one likes him. He's very controlling, doesn't let her talk to other guys or people he doesn't like. He's laid hands on her before but we can't convince her to leave. Fun times. Anyways, back to the wedding. He is of course invited only because the bridal party got to bring whoever they wanted. Boyfriend is being a sourpuss. Refusing to dance, refusing to have fun, and glaring at her for dancing with me. At some point she goes to put her wine glass down and tells him she loves him. He storms off and leaves in the middle of the reception. After listening to her and letting her cry it out in the bathroom, I get word that he's coming back. He ends up throwing her keys at her and tries to come back in. I tell our police officer what's going on. The officer talks to him for a few mins, then escorts him off the property. I hate her boyfriend.

Faith that sounds so terrible for your friend Smiley sad

As for things going wrong, we only had a few things really. We missed some photo opportunities. The photographer decided before the ceremony he wanted DH with his family and me with mine and that after the ceremony he would combine us. My family somehow missed the memo and left after the ceremony so we didn't get any photos with the two of us and them.

The only other thing was that the waiters somehow forgot to serve dessert to a few people. No one told me until days after the wedding though so there wasn't anything I could do about it.

Oh, when she came up to me with tears in her eyes asking me to dance with her to distract her, I was ready to kill him. How dare he hurt my friend of 15 years. Screw you dude. I will END you. Ok, not really, but I will ruin you socially. Especially since we're in a small town, I know people who can ruin your career. Ugh. I wish she would leave him so I could do these things.

Oh I thought of something else. My bartenders randomly put out a tip jar. The first moment I saw that I went up to the head catering lady and told her I was not comfortable with that, especially since I had already given a tip to the bartenders. She removed it immediately and apologized and said she wasn't even aware because she was in the back prepping for dinner.

My mom showed up in the hotel parking lot that morning. Drunk and wanting to fight her pregnant daughter on her wedding day. DH and my brother dealt with that mess. The other one was that DH forgot the vases for the tree planting in his aunts car. They are from out of town and got lost on the way to the wedding. Our backup plan was to just put the tree back in the groom's getting ready room and skip that part of the ceremony if we didn't have the vases, so it was extremely minor.

It was breezy and cool on our wedding day (surprising because it had been in the 90s all week), and the wind blew our wedding arch over about 15 minutes before the ceremony was supposed to start. We have some amazing friends who jumped in, put it back up, and managed to weigh it down with a few small rocks they found. I didn't know any of this until after the wedding was over! Also, someone forgot to fill our glasses with sparkling cider for the toast (I am actually deathly allergic to alcohol and salad dressings) so we just toasted with our water glasses.

Messed up tabled numbers at the venue that messed up my seating chart. Caused a bunch of family drama because close family was seated further back then they should of. This was on both sides of the family but my grandmother and aunt were the only ones who had their knickers in a twist over it. I'm still p/o'ed over their behavior. My grandmother even left for Greece early because we didn't give her the 'recognition' she deserved.

Nothing major. I did my own hair, but it was windy so it got a little jacked up. No biggie, I re-touched it before dinner. I also forgot to paint my nails the night before (after not biting them for 3 months so they would look nice!), and didn't have time to do it in the morning. DH and I were too busy stuffing our faces with donuts and relaxing on our suite's patio. We kept it low-maintenance. Smiley smile

We ordered lobster for our macaroni and cheese station--didn't get it. I was so looking forward to lobster mac! The station was still a hit but I was disappointed.

Somebody missed the memo that we were serving, not saving, the top tier of our cake. So they sliced the bottom tier into tiny, tiny pieces and wrapped the top tier for us.

"Wrong" in many cases, is just another word for 'unexpected' and rarely does anything really ruin the wedding day.....mostly, these gaffes make for some pretty funny stories later on....probably not that day though, lol!

I've seen so much happen at weddings, I wouldn't know where to start...from dropped wedding cakes to lateness by everyone and everything (once or twice so bad that the wedding didn't happen....) to screaming, wailing, horrifying kids (sorry m.....) to fainting BP's to disgusting food and service.

At the end, everyone (well, almost) is married

I suppose the other little thing that happened was that DH and I got up at the beginning of the reception to welcome everyone. We said that we wanted everyone to embrace the chance to spend an evening with family and proposed a toast to our guests. Except we forgot our glasses. I grabbed my friends champagne flute only to find it empty. People still raised their glasses, but we felt silly. It wasn't an actual issue though.

My sister (MOH) fainted during the ceremony. Also, our photographer apparently had some kind of medical emergency, took a pain pill (or two) and then went outside to nap during the reception.

I agree with Celia, though. I feel like if I had heard of either of those things before the wedding, I would have been horrified, but it really didn't matter. It scared the hell out of me when my sister went down, but then she got back up. My (male) cousin lightened the mood by jumping up to give her his seat and yelling, "I'll fill in!" It was actually kind of funny. As for the photographer, obviously not ideal, but at least we had a second photographer.

Nothing came close to being a big deal, but an usher told me the cones for the petal toss blew off the table an he and the other usher went around collecting as many as they could. I would have been totally fine if they hadn't bothered and couldn't believe they had done it. But I was also glad nobody told me before the wedding.

The other thing was that the guests cut up and served our top tier cake, so all I got was the bite right after we cut it. We weren't planning on saving it, but we were planning on taking it with us and eating it later. We had plenty of cupcakes for everyone. Who does that?

It was super windy and my dress had ruffles. In some of our photos the location is gorgeous, but the wind would catch my dress in the wrong direction and they just didn't come out how I wanted. It only happened in a few, but still. Other than that, the day went pretty smooth.

The only thing that I wish I could have done differently was wear more hairspray! Sounds silly, but my curls fell out before the ceremony and it doesn't look great in those pictures. Other than that nothing went wrong as far as I know!
