What width of tulle do I need?

HalloweenBride, on September 2, 2012 at 11:17 PM Posted in Style and Décor 1 13

I plan on using tulle to soften a few things like the head table, and to drape between the beams in the venue. I know how to figure how much length I need, but it comes in so many different widths, I don't know what width to buy!

So, here is a picture of my venue, do I need 18" wide, or wider? I think typically the next width up is 52" or 54". HELP!!!!!

Thanks! It was cheap! Lol. And I can bring in my own caterer, which was a big deal for me as I hate typical wedding food.

Sorry - not sure. I think 18 inch would be fine for edging tables and draping on beams, but if you want to cover walls etc, 54 inch would probably be better.

I would get the widest tulle you can find for draping between the rafters. That way it will drape nicely! If it's too wide (though I doubt it will be) you can always cut it in half and have twice as much tulle. That's the nice thing about tulle, it doesn't unravel.

    I think I bought 40 yards of 54" tulle on eBay for about $20. Here's a link:

    Good luck!

I was thinking the 18 inch would bunch up nice enough, I don't want to have to cut the 53 inch down....I don't plan on decorating the walls.

I've seen better prices for that Linda. I've got one link that's $10 a roll. I just didn't want to mess with cutting the tulle straight.

I think the 54 width is best for draping. I bought 54 inch for our wedding.

Besides the little rolls that you can buy at the craft stores like Michaels and Joannes, Tulle usually comes in 54" and 108" widths. Yes I said 108" wide or 9 feet across. Now if you get that you will get twice the width that you can normally get and you could try to cut it as it would probably be cheaper than going for the 54" - but that's up to you - if you think you can cut that length. It would definitely be the cheaper route to go. But honestly I think you would be better going 54". You could probably buy a entire bolt's worth which is 15 yards or 45 feet, so you might actually need more than that if you are going across the top beams as well.

    Good luck!

Not going across the beams, just across, I have the measurements of in between the beams, did all that, like I said, I wanted width wise.

I read somewhere that the 54 inch was too wide to drape nicely, but 18 didn't seem wide enough, and I don't want to cut a bunch of tulle down the middle, I would need AT LEAST 80 yards, that's a heck of a lot of tulle to cut down the middle and wrap back around the bolt.

Wider, if not it will look too sparse. It will drape well unless it is a 2 ft span.
