What's a good bustle?

Melissa, on December 16, 2017 at 6:13 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18

I brought my dress in today to start alterations. I'm so excited to see it become my exact dress. Except then came the bustle. He said he typically only does the French or American and showed me them on my dress and I HATED the way they looked. The French does not go with my dress style at all and the American makes it look like I have a tulle tail. He told me to go home and look on the internet for some other options and let him know at our next fitting. Except I'm pretty much only finding variations of those two bustles. I didn't think this would be the hardest part about alterations.

What are some other options?

I'm pretty sure mine was American, but it had 7 points that circled the back so it just made it look like I had a very full skirt that flared out below my butt and on the sides, looked like a continuation of the way my mermaid dress flared out in the front. I don't think I have any good pictures of it, though. I thought it was a pretty good option for a mermaid dress to have a multi-point bustle. It wasn't obvious in the way that a single point bustle would have been, and it took weight off of a single bustle and spread it out over all 7 points. I have no idea how that kind of bustle would look on other types of dresses, though.

    What silhouette is your dress?

I wish I had a picture of the back of my dress. The train isn't too long, it long enough where it looks like I'm shitting tulle if I don't bustle it right. I pretty much not want to be able to tell there's a bustle

I think mine ended up a modified French. I love it, it doesn't hide my buttons and it poofs out just right!

You don't have to do a bustle, you can do a wrist loop

I definitely don't want the restriction of a wrist loop. I want it bustled. Just one that looks good with my dress

Did they show you bustles with just one pick up point, or did they show you what your dress would look like with multiple points? I think they told me having multiple points would make mine look less obvious. I found this picture from our first dance. It's not the greatest view, but I don't have any pics from my fittings that would show the back bustled.

Have you looked at a side bustle?

He did show me with a one and three points for both. I feel like I'll end up going with a low French as long as it's not collecting right under my ass

It looks like they can do the French really low, not near your butt at all, and it looks really pretty:

Can you ask them about a ballroom bustle? That's what I had. Here's a pic of it un-bustled...

    MAF - that's gorgeous!

Melissa - I hope they can do the ballroom bustle! If not, Googling "low French bustle" showed a bunch of versions of really low bustles on a lot of different dresses.

The front of my dress sort of swept up to one side, so my seamstress actually created a bustle to match that idea in the back.

@MAF I've been looking at your 2 pics trying to figure out where the other half of your dress went! That looks incredible

Thanks guys, I was psyched with it - it basically all went in and up and she installed color coded "snaps" and ties to secure it... that's about all I can tell ya LOL
