What's the average amount of gifts you registered for?

Megan, on January 22, 2019 at 4:45 PM Posted in Registry 0 13

I'm having a "smaller" wedding; 78 guests invited. We're having a couple's wedding shower, and then obviously the wedding itself.

We registered at Target and IKEA, and mostly at IKEA we registered for a bunch of little stuff (think 2$ wood spoon, 5$ colander, etc.) At Target, we did a few big ticket items, along with some smaller things.

What IS kind of the amount of gifts you should register for? I just want to see if there's a magical number; whether it be dollar amount or physical item amount, that we should aim for? I found something on a website where 1/3 gifts should be under 50$, 1/3 gifts should be under 100$, and 1/3 gifts should be over 150$. But that's... like a lot of math to figure out HAHASmiley laugh I know typically you spend around 50$ on a gift for a wedding, but oftentimes that's per 2 people coming as a couple. (some could spend less which I totally understand, I don't want people to spend an arm and a leg!)

I ask because at first, my sister was shocked at how few items we had registered for (I think it was about 15 at Target and 11 at Ikea). So I went back online and registered for more; mostly small stuff (we had forgotten the whole kitchen cookware section at Ikea haha!) Now I'm up to 30 at Target (worth around 900&dollarSmiley winking and 25 at Ikea (worth like 100&dollarSmiley winking

But now I'm nervous. Am I asking for too much, even if they are small ticket items (with a few large ticket items- a vacuum, a handheld vac, comforter, pots/pans)

I'm feeling like I'm asking for too much now, and should cut back down my registry.

Any help is welcome! I feel like a bad bride asking for, what I feel, is a lot- even if I have a really good mix of very low priced items along a few higher priced where people can go in together for (that's something my family does a lot)

I'd have at least one per household for the actual wedding. Then one per household invited to the shower for the shower. Inevitably, someone will gift cash for one or the other so all won't be purchased. We tried to pretty evenly do things under $50, things between $50-$100, then a few things over $200. We have 83 guests for 115 households but only because we didn't want excess things and I know my Italian family will give only cash. I don't think there is such a thing as "too much" as long as you won't be bummed if you get some stuff over other things.

I would say you could register for 2 gifts per invited guest and not have too much. We invited over 200 and registered for about 150 things just because we only wanted to add stuff we truly needed. Everything was purchased before the wedding. Most guests bought multiple things. The majority of people spent between $75-$150 on us with family members spending between $300-$1000 on gifts. I would say you’re definitely not asking for too much. Register for good quality stuff you truly need, not just cheap things because you’re worried about guests wallets. People want to get you nice things to start out your lives together.

    I gotcha!

Yeah his half is very Italian and asked that we put together a newlywed fund as well- although his mom did say she wanted to buy the vacuum (hurray!) which is our biggest ticket item at about 175$.

Yeah we have so many little items that it would have been hard to know who would buy what and at what dollar amount. However, with everything from Ikea, all the little stuff could realistically go together as one gift lol

    Thanks Smiley smile

We have a newlywed fund for house renovations and our honeymoon set up, so I think that plays into my mind as well.

But even adding everything up, I agree with you that we didn't register for too much since there's also that good ol "cash" option people like to do!

I registered for about 50 items between two registries (we will have close to 150 guests). I didn’t want to register for too much so the likeliness of getting things I really needed is higher!

We aren't doing a newlywed fund nor did anyone ask us too. Some of our older guests (I think) will see it as tacky and I don't want to pay the fee to the company. We just want the full cash or check value. We just made sure to add luxury things like really nice sheets, really nice towels, etc.

We had everything purchased off our 3 registries before the wedding and at the wedding we received cash/checks. We received a pretty nice 5 figure sum. I think most people give physical gifts for the shower and cash at the wedding.

We registered for 250 items half of which are under $50. We invited 150 people. We’re not doing any sort of money fund and we don’t have much for a new household so we had to register for pretty much everything. Plus stuff we knew wouldn’t get bought but 20% off after the wedding is a nice discount so we added a few more things just for the discount after.

It’s actually at a lot of places that do registries now. Zola, bed bath and beyond, Amazon has it for prime members. I know there’s more. Zola was the first to do it and everyone else kind of followed suit shortly after. I made an amazon registry just for the 20% that I don’t even plan on putting on our website.

We're having a slightly bigger wedding and registered for 60 things. I thought it was too many considering I would really rather have just a few big ticket things, but Zola gives you 20% off after on anything that wasn't purchased for 6 months after the wedding. My thought is if we decide we really want it and it didn't get gifted, then at least we get it on sale.

I have 79 items on my registry with 117 invited guests. We didn’t do any money funds. Half the items are less than $50 and the highest ticket item is about $400. Don’t worry about the cost or asking for too much and just register for what you truly want. It’s nice to give people options and your friends/family may surprise you with their generosity.

Thanks Smiley smile I will keep what I have then. I feel confident in our choices, especially with having so many really low ticket priced items (like 2$ for a lot of stuff haha)
