When did a KitchenAid become a "wedding gift standard"?

GrayCatVintage, on September 24, 2014 at 10:54 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 56

I was just curious because as a person who cooks, I never use mine.

For years I had an original 1960's KitchenAid stand mixer. It was black and white and it worked but I never used it. Last month, my aunt moved and she gave me her brand new white KitchenAid with all the attachments and everything. She never used it so I said I would take it. It's a large machine that I really do not think I will use. If anything, I might use the dough hook to make bread. Why are these such popular wedding gift items? For those who have one, do you use it?

We use ours all the time. I actually started to bake/cook more because of it. DH loves to cook/bake and he utilizes it for most recipes and even bought a cookbook for KitchenAid - it was hilarious.

Depends on who you are... I plan on being a stay at home wife/mother and make all my own food. FH's aunt is a role model for mother/wifey... she uses hers ALL the time. I think a lot also has to do with whether or not you have a big family, it makes it so much easier for my FAIL because she has 8 kids (well, only 5 of them at home now) and FH and I want a big family.

I cook almost all our meals from scratch and I just can't find a reason to drag it out. Even if I make something like pie crust, I use a pastry cutter. I use the food processor all the time but I use that for vegetables mostly.

We have two! We use them all the time. One for cooking and the other is used for display. I make custom KitchenAid mixer decals for people. Smiley smile

I've had mine for about 3 years and have only used it a hand full of times. However, I feel like this is because I've lived in apartments since I've gotten it and just don't have the kitchen space for it to be out, even just to use and put back away. It's literally still in the box. My mom uses hers allll the time. Huge baker. If I didn't have one, I probably wouldn't ask for one though.

I love baking and I'm also a lazy person so, having a stand mixer would be glorious. So we have one on our registry.

As soon as I get up I'll be using ours. we use ours a lot, but we bake a lot. it may seem not worth it, but they are made to last, and can do a lot more work then your usual mixers they sell. make use of it, they are great!

edit: btw- if you ever want to make fondant, don't use anything but a kitchen aid mixer. mixing fondant will ruin the other type.

@StitchingBride: I made fondant a few weeks ago and I would have never thought about putting it in the mixer. This weekend I am busting the mixer out to make rolls I think.

I use mine every now and then, I don't bake as much as I used to. FH was diagnosed with Diabetes last year, so cookies are few and far between. That being said, I use my hand mixer for the occasional brownies, or mash potatoes and what not. It is just to big and bulky to pull out everytime and I have no extra counter space. I got it off a friend for $100 so I got a deal, but I hardly ever use it. Old habits die hard I suppose.

I cook allll the time, but I rarely use my kitchen aid. It's probably the "appliance" I use least. We have the Artisan mixer in Caviar and I feel like I spent an awful lot of money on something that just sits around.

I had one before I got married. I use it for mixing cookie dough, bread dough, mashed potatoes, my husband uses it to make dough for those Polish potato dumplings (I can't remember what they're called now). I use it maybe once a month.

I don't have one and am not registering for one because we will never use it. My parents have all kinds of kitchen knick knacks that have turned into magnet holders and dust collectors because they are never used. I don't need any extra clutter in our tiny apartment.

Haha, we are using FH's grandmother's vintage (like 1950's version) kitchenaid and it is AWESOME for baking. I use it for baking, specifically, for homemade cookies (it kneads the flour mixture a hell of a lot better than my weak arms) and I've used it all this summer making little strawberry cheesecake bites which I took to quite a few parties and they were a hit. The kitchenaid whipped up the cheesecake filling like nothing else could. I don't plan on having a registry. IF someone decided to throw us a bridal shower (slim chance of that) we already discussed, if we were pressured into registering for gifts by his mom or anyone else close to us, we are happy with our vintage kitchenaid and won't be registering for a new version!

I have wanted a kitchenaid for a while, my mom has one and I used it a ton when I still lived at home. So two years ago my fh got me one for Christmas. I use it all the time. I keep it on the counter, so I guess that makes a difference. It is easy to get to when I need it. I don't have tons of counter space but I make a priority for that. But I use it for everything from baking (creams butter way better than you can by hand), to mashed potatoes, to pizza dough and bread, to homemade whipped cream (super easy with the mixer and so much better than store bought). My fh and I enjoy cooking together and I love kitchen gadgets so I'm glad I have it.

Growing up my mom made three meals a day for my whole family and we never had a Kitchen Aid. When I got to know my FMIL, she has one and I saw how helpful it could be in multi-tasking (let it knead bread or beat eggs or whatever). I used hers last weekend to mix up ice cream--just put the ingredients in and it did all the work, and we ended up with a bowlful of liquid ice cream (yum!!). FH and I would also like to make our own sausage/grind our own meat, and there's an attachment for that too. We did receive one as a wedding gift, and I am so excited! FMIL and her mom use theirs constantly, FWIW.
