When did a KitchenAid become a "wedding gift standard"?

I was just curious because as a person who cooks, I never use mine. For years I had an original 1960's KitchenAid stand mixer. It was black and white and it worked but I never used it. Last month, my aunt moved and she gave me her brand new white KitchenAid with all the attachments and everything....

For years I had an original 1960's KitchenAid stand mixer. It was black and white and it worked but I never used it. Last month, my aunt moved and she gave me her brand new white KitchenAid with all the attachments and everything. She never used it so I said I would take it. It's a large machine that I really do not think I will use. If anything, I might use the dough hook to make bread. Why are these such popular wedding gift items? For those who have one, do you use it?

I WANT IT SO BAD! but I bake A LOT! I am working on starting my own bakery so I bake for friends parties and work functions all the time. I use a hand mixer now and we haven't bought our own because we knew we were going to register for one (plus I want the more expensive professional series). We are going to have a specific outlet installed in our kitchen so I can keep it on the counter where I want it.

Also, FH hunts a lot and like Jenn said it has a nice meat grinding attachment so we can make our own ground venison or venison sausage.

ETA: we registered for a few non-standard attachments (the meat grinder and the scrapper paddle) and the actual mixer and it was funny because we got the attachments at the shower but haven't gotten the mixer yet. FH aunt who gave them to us came up to me afterwards and said "so you got the attachments but no stand mixer?" I just said that even if we aren't given one we will get one after the wedding so she doesn't have to worry about it we will keep the attachments either way.

Our consultant at BB&B was shocked that I didn't want one. I cook for us to eat and am pretty good at it, but that is all.

We've had ours for about a year and use it regularly. When we remodeled our kitchen and had custom cupboards built, we made a spot specifically for our Kitchen Aid Pro. When we open the cupboard, it's there. If I had to work to get it out all the time, I probably wouldn't use it.

I seriously love my Kitchen Aid. FH bought it for me for Christmas 2 years ago after seeing me using a hand mixer and hating it. I use it a lot more for baking than for cooking. I bake often, especially in the fall and during the holidays and it has been a life saver. It's also great for whipped cream and frosting.

I hope I get one but I understand I probably wont. I used my moms all the time when I lived at home! It is true though, if its not out on the counter you wont use it as much lol!

I use mine for mostly for cookies and mashed potatoes. I didn't use it a lot when it wasn't on the counter (cause it's heavy and a pain to lug around) - so we reorganized our kitchen to give the kitchenaid room on the counter and I use it 2-3 times a month now.

I have the higher powered Kitchen Aid because I bake cakes on the side. I use it very often. However if you don't bake I can see it being a huge waste. I think people just like the idea of their guests buying them an expensive present.

I had an old school black and white one. My step dad gave it to me when I started baking. He said he had it for 20 years and never used it. I got a good 4 year of use out of it until I tried mixed fondant in it and blew the motor. So I splurged and bought the nicer one.

Fi's god mother was sad she isn't able to buy us the mixer. Apparently this is her go to gift and she was excited to get it for us. I told her is she wanted she could get attachments instead Smiley smile

I think it's like anything else; if it's right on the counter and convenient to use, you'll find reasons to use it. I have a Cuisinart food processor and a bread machine and I use them ALL the time, but they're as accessible as running water.

I bake all the time, and I just had a crappy old hand mixer that barely worked so I ended up mixing most things by hand anyway - which sucks because I have carpal tunnel syndrome. For the past several years, whenever a family member asked what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas, a KitchenAid mixer was the first thing I asked for. I got one for my shower and I think it's my favorite gift. I've used it three times already, I love it so much!

I want one really bad but I'm not paying $300.00 for one. I've been trying to find a used one or something. I think I would use mine a lot. My Aunt has one and uses hers daily, for just about everything. I feel like if I had one, I would make it a point to use it.

The only thing I regret about my Kitchen Aid mixer is that I didn't get the bigger size one. I use it constantly. My husband bought it for me when our daughter was born. She will be 10 next month. I used it to make all of her baby food with the puree attachment. I use it to make bread every week. I haven't bought bread in years. If I make mashed potatoes, I whip them in it. I have the grater attachment. I use that for veggies all the time. People grow zucchini and they all give me the overflow - a lot of zucchini. I grate it all with the machine to make bread with it. I usually make 3-4 dozen loaves of zucchini bread every summer. So it saves me a ton of time hand grating it. Next month I will start making and freezing holiday cookies. I usually make 30 or 40 dozen cookies that I give to family and friends every year. This machine seriously gets a workout in my kitchen.

I have had my kitchenaide mixer for almost a decade. When I was living in apartments, it was always put away and such a pain to get out and use but I never had enough counter space to keep it out. When we started remodeling our kitchen, one of my requests was that I either had a pullout shelf that becomes counter level with the mixer attached to it or I had an entire section dedicated to having it out. The latter won which I'm completely fine with.

I also *hate* clutter on my counters, but since we now have it out 24-7, we use it at least once a week if not more. Freaking love it!

I cannot until we have enough space to use ours. I'm not a baker but every time I am at my in laws house and making dinner, I use it. I actually am NOT a baker but still see the beauty in that machine.

Its great for making meatballs, meatloaf, shredding chicken (which I absolutely HATE to do otherwise) and I love it for making dough especially pizza dough. You can make a shit ton of pizza dough and have it in the freezer at the ready for homemade pizza night. I'd like to get the pasta attachment and make some fresh pasta.

I think it has become a standard as a gift because its pretty. Is it fully necessary? No. If you hate to cook or bake, why register for it?

I actually got one from FMIL for Christmas a few years back. I may only use it once or twice a year, but when I do, I'm glad I have it.

I specifically did not register for one because I knew it wouldn't be used all that much. I'm never home between work and school. FH and I like to cook, but rarely ever have time to make anything elaborate. Maybe in a year or two we will have the free time.

My FMIL kept bugging me to register for it but I wouldn't do it. She just ended up buying me one for my shower anyway and I feel bad because in the last 6 months since the wedding I have used it exactly 2 times.

The grinder/sausage making attachments are nice. I would like the pasta maker and the grain mill. Probably not the most necessary of things but with baking bread as much as I do, it would get used.
