When did long and expensive bachelor/bachelorette parties become a thing?

I've always thought those parties were more of a one night thing maybe even two...not several days to a week long vacation where it costs several hundred dollars. I get you have the right to that kind of thing but I'm a bit annoyed I guess because a friend of mine has hers in Puerto Rico and it's at...

I've always thought those parties were more of a one night thing maybe even two...not several days to a week long vacation where it costs several hundred dollars. I get you have the right to that kind of thing but I'm a bit annoyed I guess because a friend of mine has hers in Puerto Rico and it's at least $1,000 (most of us aren't going) and her fiance (my fiance is his groomsman) wants a 5 day cruise in the Caribbean. Fiance doesn't want to go because it's so much money and we have our own wedding expenses but will go because the whole grooms party is going and it's his close friend. I'm noticing it to be a thing. Last year our friends wanted to go to Vegas for the weekend, another wanted Miami, someone else suggested Hawaii.

Fiance and I are both doing something out of town but more of a one night thing within driving distance out of town. Reasonable where all friends can afford to go and still have fun.

Also, what are your plans for your party?

Lol, true. We still have a honeymoon trip to save up for...and wedding. Not spend $800 on a cruise...

We drive two hours away and stayed in/relaxed the first night, hit a vineyard the next day, then bar hopped that night. It was nice to forget about work, school, the wedding, and just hang with good friends and relax! We pitched in to stay at a resort and a hotel in the river walk so for each girl it was only $70 for the weekend for both! All they paid for after was gas, food, and drinks! It was not that bad and we had a blast so I was pleased. I was good with a weekend and ready to come home by Sunday so I don’t know how people do a week!

I’m not sure when they became lavish, we know of a friend of my fiancé’s who is going on a week long bachelor party in Mexico 😳 he told us it cost >$1500 which is so crazy to me. Especially because this person has several weddings to attend this year (including ours 😖)

I agree it’s way out of control and part of the obsession over being a bride.

Mine is out of town (mostly since my friends are scattered across states), and it was a “I’m renting a house, feel free to come in for a low key weekend of gal pal time”, and if you can make any of it great.
I have told everyone that’s invited, it’s my excuse to invite all these amazing women I love to one place where they can meet - I’m so proud of who they are, I cannot cannot wait to celebrate them!

We're going to a AirBnB in my city of Toronto for a weekend. Sipping on cocktails, spa and dinners!

I did a weekend within drivable distance from my home & all in all it cost my girls $133 a piece for the house/food/ drinks/ & travel. My H did a 6 day in Austin (we are in NJ) that cost a ton more, we are older and most of us have great jobs and are pretty established - to each his or her own. I would never judge anyone for doing what they want for the bach party. No one is ever obligated to part take.

That is absolutely insane! I would not go either. My friends threw me a fun spa day and night out. It was super fun and a good time. No one broke the bank.
